Blessing Rites and Charms

Pour the waters, raise the cup. Drink your share of wisdom deep. Strength and joy now fill us up. As the elder ways we keep. (optional extra verses) When in ancient pagan days, Fire was lit in sacred groves, Powers of the gods did flow, Bringing healing, wit, and love. We in our time likewise go, To the grove our trove to give, To the gods, the dead, the sidhe, And their blessings to receive. So pour the waters, raise the cup. Drink your share of wisdom deep. Strength and joy now fill us up. As the elder ways we keep. (Words and music by Ian Corrigan; Sheet Music) We have audio for a bright version and a dirge version (sometimes used for High Days between Sept and March, the "dark half of the year"). The "bright version" is usually sung as just the first verse, but may include all verses, while the dirge version consists of the first verse only.

The Grove is prepared with the water cauldron, fire or fire candles, and censer. There may be a small Bile, or this may be dispensed with for small group rites. There is a cup or cups for drinking memory and blessing, and material for the Fire of Sacrifice.Grove AttunementAll work the Two Powers centering. All take nine full breaths then the priest/ess sounds nine knells or knocks.Opening PrayersAll then say:We are here to keep the old ways. O Shining Ones, hear us as we pray you As Children of the Earth. Let our call come unto you With honor and truth, As we work the work of wisdom. Mighty Mother of All, First Goddess, Bless and uphold this rite We pray you with love and reverence.Fire Well and TreeThe well is elevated and the silver offered, saying:Waters of wisdom Waters of love Waters of life O Mother of All, Be present in these waters And in this grove Sacred well flow within me.An offering is made to the Fire, saying:Fire of inspirations Fire of transformation Fire of sacrifices O Light of Inspiration Be present in this fire And in this grove Sacred fire, burn within me.Purpose & PrecedentThe priest/ess gives a welcome and description of the intention, if needed.PurificationTaking up the water, the Druid passes it around the circle, each sprinkling the water around the perimeter and on themselves, as all repeat as many times as necessary:By the might of the Primal Waters, This grove is made sacred. Let the Sea not rise, And let no ill nor bane Pass these encircling waters.Taking up the censer, she passes it around the circle, each wafting the incense around the perimeter and on themselves, as all repeat as many times as necessary:By the light of the Sacred Fire, This grove is enchanted. Let the Sky not fall, And let only blessing Be welcome at this fire. All join hands, or make contact again, saying:The Sacred Grove stands firm and true, In Land, Sea and Sky, Below and on high. Let the Land hold fast beneath us. The Fire, the Well, the Sacred Tree Flow and Flame and Grow in me. Thus is the Sacred Grove Claimed and hallowed!Opening the GatesHe makes offering to the MacLir, saying:Gray One of the Borders, Lord of the Isle of Apples, Teacher of the Wise, Fosterer of Heroes, Keeper of the Roads and Ways: Hold open the way Between the Worlds, we pray. Gatekeeper: accept our sacrifice! All envision the triskel gate in the center of the grove, and the priest/ess makes a deosil triskel over the fire, saying:By the Lord of the Borders, And by our magic, Let this sacred center be As the boundary between all worlds: Let the gate be open!Kindred OfferingsIn this model, the key offerings are replaced with three passings of the horn of memory and honor, one round for each of the three kindreds. Honoring each of the kindreds proceeds in this outline:The priest/ess, or a chosen speaker, takes up the horn and fills it with ale. She gives the general invocation to the kindred being honored. The horn passes sunwise. As each receives it, he may speak in honor of the members of the kindred with whom he has a relationship. For instance, he might honor his own genetic/cultural ancestors, or those heroes that inspire/guide him. She may name her animal/plant allies or her companions among the sidhe. She will name her patron deities and any other God/desses she wishes. After speaking, each drinks. After all have spoken and drunk, the speaker fills the horn again, and/or prepares another offering, and speaks the second part of the kindred.FOR THE DEADO Mighty Ones Our Ancestors, Our Kindred: We, your children honor you. You whose life and death creates our lives; You whose wisdom upholds our wisdom; Hear us as we name you, and invite you to our fire...Pass the horn.O Mighty Ancestors, We honor your presence Offering our love and worship. Be with us in our grove And in our hearts And accept this gift In token of our kinship. The offering is made. All cry:Ancestors: accept our sacrifice!TO THE SIDHEO Noble Ones, our Allies With whom we share the worlds; You who fill the land with wonder; Spirits of Stone and Stream, Red and Green; Tribes of Spirits, the Peoples of the Otherworld: Hear us as we name you, and invite you to our fire...Pass the horn.O Noble Spirits, We honor your presence Offering our love and worship. Be with us in our grove And in our hearts And accept this gift In token of our friendship. The offering is made. All cry:Spirits: accept our sacrifice!TO THE GOD/DESSESO Shining Ones, our Elders, Goddesses and Gods; O Wisest and Mightiest; You who sustain all the worlds; First Children of the Mother, the Tribe of the Goddess: Hear us as we name you and invite you to our fire...Pass the horn.O Shining Deities, We honor your presence Offering our love and worship. Be with us in our grove And in our hearts And accept this gift In token of our friendship. The offering is made. All cry:Shining Ones: accept our sacrifice!Sacrifice and OmenAfter all the kindreds have been offered to, the Grove vision is reestablished and the presence of the host of spirits is acknowledged. A final offering is prepared, along with the bit of sacred Fire. The company chooses a chant or wordless call, and raises energy through rhythm, drumming and song. At the height of the chant, all fall into silence, and the prayer of sacrifice is made and the offering given:Now, let our voices arise on the fire; Let our voices resound in the well; Let our call pass the gate to the land of spirits. Holy kindreds: Gods, Dead and Sidhe: The Children of Earth Send you love and honor with this gift. Holy Ones, accept our sacrifice! The offering is given. An omen is taken, saying:Holy ones, we have honored you. And now, we pray you bless us in turn, As a gift calls for a gift. Reveal to us now what blessing you offer In return for our sacrifice! The omen is interpreted, and the folk are led to devise a boon or request based on the offers of the powers. The BlessingThe folk call for the blessing, saying:As Children of Earth, We call for the blessing of the Ancient Ones. Together we cry: Shining Ones, give us the waters! We join our hearts, that each of us be blessed. Together we cry: Shining Ones, give us the waters! And as we are blessed, let all the Worlds be blessed. Together we cry: Shining Ones, give us the waters! The Druid pours the Blessing into the horn, saying:We draw water from the Well of Wisdom, We pour the Ale of Inspiration. The horn is elevated, saying:O Mighty, Noble and Shining Ones, We have given to you, And now we ask you to bless us in turn, As a gift calls for a gift. Hallow these waters, O holy powers. Grant us the blessing we seek. May the Wisdom, Love and Power Of the Gods, Dead and Sidhe, Flow in this Horn of Blessing. Behold: the Waters of Life! The horn is passed, and all drink. As the horn passes, a meditation is led to attune all to the blessing. One such might be:We take up the chalice of Joy and Power, The cup of Fire and Shadow that stirs the soul. Let us taste the Waters of Wisdom's Well; Let us drink the Ale of Inspiration. We open ourselves to the Blessing of the Powers: Lead us in the Elder Ways; Guide our walk through our life's road, Through our destiny's song. Ancient and Wonderful Powers, Shining Gods, Mighty Dead, Noble Sidhe: Come into us here in our Grove To share and join in our work. May your magic awaken in our blood, For we are all your children. Flow in us, Power of Magic; Shine in our Loins; Shine in our Hearts; Shine in our Heads. Let there be no part of us That is not of the Gods! The SpellThose who wish will have brought candles, talismans, etc. to be blessed for their personal intentions. The candles/talismans are now put by the Hallows, as each makes a simple statement of their need or intention. The company then raises power, usually by a simple, repetitive chant, such as:All: We are one, we are one... (repeat ad infinitum)Descant: In this task we've begun What we will shall be done...This should be accompanied by drums, and build well and strong. If desired, each candle or item may be passed round the ring to receive the blessing of each, returning it to the altar after one round. At the druid's signal, the drums and chant stop suddenly. In the silence, all direct their energy to the altar with imagination and breath. The leader may give some suggestions to accomplish this. Those with needs visualize their goals, as all join in working for the good of all. A final re-centering and declaration of ending finishes the work.ClosingThe Gatekeeper is thanked and the gate closed, saying:Keeper of Gates, Lord of Ways: For watching and warding The ways between, We give you our thanks. Now, let the Fire be but flame; Let the Well be but water; Let all be as it was before, Save only for the magic We have made. Let the gates be closed!Center is renewed one final time, and all balanced. Then all recite the Great Blessing:We offer our thanks: To the Mother of All. We offer our thanks: To the Gods, Dead and Spirits. May the Three Sacred Kins Bring joy to all beings And renew the Ancient Wisdom. To the Fire, Well and Tree: We offer our thanks. May Wisdom, Love and Power Kindle in all beings And renew the Ancient Wisdom. To the Earth, Sea and Sky: We offer our thanks. May the Ancient Wisdom be renewed, And may all beings know: Peace, Joy and Happiness In all the worlds. So be it!

As part of our work to develop our own cosmology, we continue our regular An Bruane meetings. Once or twice a month, members of Shining Lakes Grove meet to discuss, research, and perform rituals specifically aimed at performing works for our deities or our lands. On November 10th, six Grove members (Fox, Rob, Mama Moon, Kore, Marae Price, and Lori Hammock) visited Rob's parents' new land to perform a blessing ritual for it.To prepare for the ritual, the group discussed the land with the Hendersons, exploring what changes they'd made and planned to make to the land, how they intended to use it, and how long they'd been living on the land.Pieces of sod were gathered from the four corners of the property and brought to the center, where it was placed in a pile. The central fire was built over the gathered land, symbolically bringing the entire property together to one central point. After standard purifications with sage, water, and ochre, the ritual began (with Jan, Rob's mother, participating). The fire was consecrated, and then a broom was made from an ash wand and birch branches. The broom was used to sweep out the house and the barn to purify it. As the buildings were swept out, they were smudged, and hawthorne branches were hung in the crawlspace or from the ceilings to protect them from fire and lightning. As added protection, and as a symbol of community, Brid's Crosses were also hung up.The ritual group then returned to the outdoors, making offerings to the fire to promote fertility and to symbolize the Hendersons' new beginnings on the property: eggs, seeds from the SLG spring equinox ritual, hawthorne, and the birch branches from the broom.Oil was offered to Lugh through the fire. Oil was then poured on the ash handle from the broom, which was held over the fire and then pounded into the ground where the Hendersons were planning on planting their garden. The intent of this was to charge the wand, and by contagion the ground, with the essences of fire, fertility, and the spirit of Lugh.Offerings were made to the Nature Spirits. As is the tradition, an area of the land (known as the Devil's Half-acre) was set aside specifically for the Nature Spirits. As a final step of the ritual, the Hendersons were instructed to spread the ashes from the fire, after it had extinguished and cooled, spreading the energy of the ritual over the land just as the energy had been pulled together at the start of the ritual, and just as the smoke from the fire had spread out over the land.

You walk ways shunned by us, and yet we call you kin to selfishness and thoughtlessness and all those parts of man that are less noble and are small and keep us in the dark. To you we make this offering, and at the same time set aside our thoughtlessness and our distractions for the duration of this Rite."Priest: "The Fire, the Well, the Sacred Tree Flow and Flame and Grow in me! In Land, Sea and Sky, Below as on high! Thus is our Grove claimed and Hallowed!"An offering oil is made to the Fire: "Keeper of the Gates! This Blessing Rite was performed by members of the Sonoran Sunrise Grove, ADF in early 2007. It follows the ADF Order of Ritual (OoR) and uses some extra non-OoR elements taken from the Grove's standard rite, such as a Guardian Invocation, and the establishment of the Three Realms in addition to the Three Worlds. This rite was performed using the Irish Celtic pantheon. There are a couple of phrases in the video that may need explanation:Bíodh sé amhlaidh! - (Pronounced as: BEE-uh SHAY Ow-LEE). This means So be it! in Irish Gaelic.*ghosti - (pronounced as: GOHS-tee). This is a reconstructed Proto-Indo-European word that means, "someone with whom one has reciprocal duties of hospitality." A common description of this concept is the phrase, "I give so that I may receive." Much of ADF religion is based on this idea. The 35 minute video was broken up into 7 sequences, of roughly 5-6 minutes in length each, with the contents of each sequence listed below. The title of each part of the video is my own, and does not reflect any standardized names. There are two versions for each video - one for dial-up modems (56k) and one for cable/ISDN modems.Opening Sequence (Part 1) - View VideoProcessionGuardian SacrificeOutdwellers OfferingPurificationMusical SignalEarth MotherInspiration and Empowering (Part 2) - View VideoBardic Sacrifice to BrigitPurpose and PrecedentThe Two Powers (The Three Worlds)The Sacred Center (Part 3) - View VideoThe Three RealmsConsecrating the Hallows (Well, Fire, Tree)Gatekeeper InvocationOpening the Gates to the OtherworldsThe Three Kindreds (Part 4) - View VideoKindred OfferingsAncestorsNature SpiritsDeitiesPraise and Sacrifice (Part 5) - View VideoPraise OfferingsGwydion (Welsh)Rhiannon (Welsh)Turan (Iranian)Prayer of Sacrifice"Bull" Sacrifice/Shared MealPiacular SacrificeReceiving the Blessings (Part 6) - View VideoThe OmenThe Blessings (Return Flow)Calling for the BlessingHallowing the BlessingAffirming the BlessingClosing the Rite (Part 7) - View VideoThanking the BeingsClosing the GatesThanking the Earth MotherMusical SignalGrounding and CenteringBlessing and Ending

This rite was worked ex tempore, without scripting, based on ADF's Core Order of Ritual. It shows three experienced ritualists working a simple rite from memory and inspiration. New ritualists would, perhaps, bring scripts.Chatter as the participants arrive: Celebrants approach in the woods. Setting their items down. "We have a nice tree right here." " This should work well. Nice little altar." "Oatmeal for Earth Mother. Rum for the Ancestors. Incense...(fire starter is lit in the small mini cauldron) Tree, the other offerings..." "Waters, fire, oatmeal" (3 bowls set out, large offering bowl, all set on a large rock) "Do you have the water"? " Oh yeah. I have an Offering for the Outsiders." " Blessing..." (brings out matches to light the fire starter in the mini cauldron & lights the sage/incense) "What do you call this stuff? Fire starter?" "Ok!"With all in place, the ritual begins: Children of the earth breathe deep. All stand with eyes closed, hands upward at hip height - breathingFeel the earth beneath your feet. Feel the air around this tree. Feel the earth. Feel the sun on our faces. Breathe. Purpose and Earth Motherspeaker raises hands and continuesWe have come to this place to honor the Gods, the Earth and her Kindreds: the Ancestors, the Nature Spirits, the Shining Ones. Lets us honor the Earth. All kneeling down to the ground, another speaks. Offering of grain made on the ground as these words are spokenOh Earth Mother from whose starry womb the green earth springs, source of all life, bless and uphold our rite; Earth Mother, accept our sacrifice! All respond: Earth Mother, accept our sacrifice! All stand after kissing the ground. Inspiration (and Outsiders)Another speaks:Power of inspiration, voice of the well of wisdom, fires of creativity; be with us today as we seek to honor the Gods, the Nature Spirits, the Ancestors; guide our tongues so we may speak rightly. So be it! All respond: So be it!Ale opened - another speaks:Outsiders, those within us and those without us; let the outsiders within us step aside; that within us that would hinder this working; Outsiders without us, in the world, we acknowledge your place, but for this time step aside, accept this offering and leave us in peace! The one with the ale steps away from the space and pours out the ale and returns to the people and space.Outsiders, accept this offering! All repeat the call Recreating the CosmosShall we open the Fire, the Well and the Tree? All kneel at the large rock altar. One begins to speak and slowly rubbing one finger along the top edge of the bowl around and around deosil, speaking:Sacred waters that flow beneath the earth... Well of wisdom, Well of inspiration, Well of healing, flow in our grove; Sacred Well, flow within us! All repeat calling back, last line.Another speaks: Sacred Fire, you to whom we make offerings, pour out sweet smelling things, you that keeps us in good contact with the Gods, take this offering now.Pours oil onto the fire in the mini cauldron. Sacred Fire, burn within us! All call back, last line. One lights incense, another lifts the bowl of water. One speaks as two cense and asperge the tree nearby: From the depths to the heights, spans the World Tree. Sacred Tree, grow within us! All call back, last line. PurificationThe two people cense and asperge the space and all present. All repeat:By the might of the waters, and the light of the fire, this grove is made whole and holy. Repeating 3 times. All: So be it! The incense and water are set down. Opening the GatesAll holding their hands and arms extended over the fire toward the center of the space and altar where the fire is, one speaks:We call to the Gatekeeper, keeper of the ways between the worlds; Keeper of the ways between the below world, and this world and the above world; We call to you and we ask you to join your magic with ours, Gatekeeper... May the gates between the worlds be opened! All repeat: May the gates be open! Inviting the Three KindredsLet us now honor the Kindreds.Picks up offering of oil or whiskey, preparing to make offering.First, the Ancestors - Ancestors, those who stand behind us in an unending line, our blood kin, those who walked this land before us, and those who have inspired us by their deeds and actions. We honor you, we have not forgotten you. Ancestors, accept this sacrifice! Pours liquid offering into the well. All repeat the last line.Another reaches for offering, to prepare and speaks: And to the spirits of Nature, of fur, of feather, of scale of skin, green growing things, of stone; those Nature spirits that have welcomed us here today, Nature spirits, accept this sacrifice! Offering of grain/herbs sprinkled on the ground. All repeat the last line.Another speaks, saying: Shining ones, Deities, you who are bright within our eyes; you who are far, and always near to us; come to our fires, meet us at the boundaries, guide us, and ward us, as we walk these elder ways. All repeat the last line as all make the offerings at once! The OmenAnother speaks:Now, having made our offerings, we ask what is it the kindreds offer us in return. As these words are spoken, the one pulls out a rune. What blessing may we receive? Raidho - The journey, indeed we are on a journey, and indeed we will complete it, we will find our way. This is a good omen. Calling for the BlessingsAnother speaks, holds up the chalice of the waters:Now let us call for the waters of life.Shining ones! We have offered to you, and now we ask that you give us your blessing in turn. You have given us the gift of a journey. Affirmation of the BlessingAre we willing to go on this journey? All respond: We are! Hallowing the BlessingHolding the chalice high with both hands:Shining ones, fill these waters with the strength that we need to make this journey that you have set us upon.
