It was still daylight, so the skulls weren't turned on yet, and the fire bowl hadn't been lit. The candles got lit during the calling of individual ancestors, when each guest came up and named someone to be remembered and offered to. [20:23] The candles hide all that mosaic tile work we did. I'm planning to put up a series of beginning to end photos later this or next week. [20:24] Looking forward to them. [20:26] Next up... finish the Nature shrine, replace the Seer's table, and then begin work on the central space... build a mini temple to host the deities, add a better central well. Bleh... so long as donations come in, we will continue to add. [20:27] Understand that. It is nice that you have a place to do this. [20:28] Some day, the grove will have its own place - one of our members is waiting for a major medical settlement and plans to invest in the grove with part of it. Usually I can just walk down to the school to vote and there's just about no one there in the middle of the day. I went around 1:15 today at the school they moved us to -just a tad farther and not worth the walk - and actually had to wait in line for a few minutes. [20:56] So, probably an unusually high turnout? [20:57] We had to wait for the first time I can remember for a mid term [20:57] The early voting beat records here [20:58] Possibly. Last year (I think), they changed the rules so folks can vote at any polling place instead of just the one assigned their district, so maybe a little bit has to do with more people nearby. I'm not sure. I'd like to think it's higher turn out. [20:59] [Owlhawk] projections I was seeing this afternoon were pointing towards a possible recored turn out [20:59] Our rules here didn't change. [21:15] Whoops. Caught me while i was typing. Hmm.... [21:15] That's a really good question... [21:16] I agree with you about the campaign styles [21:17] Distance is a major hindrance out west. [21:19] It is a problem in the SOuth, too. The nearest grove to us is 3 hrs away and the nearest festival is 10 hrs away. [21:19] So far as I know, there's only the one festival in CA every year, and then a few weekend things in Colorado. So there's not a a lot of opportunity for grove members or solitaries to really share in here. I've driven from NY to FL in a 24-26 hr period and passed oodles of grove locations and festivals.... but out west, it's like 12-14 hrs just to travel CA from end to end. [21:22] When 8 Winds is held in WA at Kirk's, it's a good 16-20 hour drive. CO is 10-12 hours. [21:22] But the bigger thing is there's lots of nothing in between. No cities at all, just wilderness (which is great for my naturalist side). [21:23] It is a problem. [21:23] It's 8-10 hours when 8 Winds is at our closer location near Reno but over the border to CA. [21:24] That doesn't even count the weather differences. [21:25] Yes, weather and altitude can bite [21:25] So, it's really hard to get folks to come together physically. [21:25] Mind you, I totally recognize that the folks outside the continental US have it even worse. [21:26] I know for my grove, we meet weekly and many of them rarely use social media. So, online chats and meetings don't work well. [21:26] I sit in on the Eurpoean chat on Sudays and have learned a lot about how we are viewed over there. [21:27] I don't know the frequency of other groves out here. [21:27] I can imagine there is quite a bit of frustration with the US bias in ADF thinking [21:28] Not to mention the perception of distance. I have friends in England who consider 45 minutes too far to travel while, for me, a couple of hours travel isn't too big of a deal. [21:29] One guy was upset with the lack of translations. I finally got him to understand that we aren't multilingual [21:30] Right? Most Americans, at least, can barely speak our version of English much less a second language. [21:31] I'm sad to admit I'm one of them. That's tough. I'm on DSL. Not great, but not as bad as satellite. [21:37] The price one pays for living in the countryside. Love the wildlife out here, though [21:38] Too true. [21:39] DSL over a phone line or satellite are our only options at this house, but at least we have that much. We're on the edge of antenna reception for TV if we wanted to dump DirecTV [21:40] We have DirectTV. [21:41] Out here we have the choice of propane or electric. [21:41] We are on our own well and septic system [21:44] My house is kind of oddly situated. By the map, we appear to be within the city and it has actually expanded well past us. But we're not city. The house was never given gas access, either by propane or gas line ('d have to do some major work to have propane installed, even). And we're still on the septic, though water was connected to the city a few years before I purchased the place. Cable serves much of the neighborhood within .5 miles of the [21:44] house, but our little 2 mile section is cable-less and we'd all have to sign a contract in order for the company to consider bringing service in. Oh, and we're still zoned for horses and farm animals. [21:45] We have no side walks, no street lights. But I'm within walking distance of two major super markets, three different dollar store chains, walmart and several (most) fast food joints. [21:46] We are 20 miles from the Walmart and McDonald. [21:46] And two bars... I totally forgot about those. LOL. In a town steeped in alcohol, I have no idea how I could forget them. [21:46] No sidelwaks and 3 oil derricks on this road [21:46] 20 miles.. that's how we were when I lived out east.. in NY, PA and NJ, all three. [21:46] We have a church every 5 miles or closer. [21:47] Funny how alike different parts of the nation can be [21:48] Oh, gosh... there's like... hmm... I think 10 religious buildings within a mile and a half of the house, including a two Muslim, a catholic, and some other one... maybe some Korean Christian sect. [21:49] The coolest is the Coptic church down the road a bit from us. I swear I'm gonna visit there one day. [21:50] But this city is odd compared to other places I've lived. Everything repeats about every 5 miles. Walmarts, gas stations, food market chains (we have 4 or 5 different major chains for some weird reason), bars (they're also chains).. they all repeat. [21:50] You should. [21:50] Coptic! That's cool. [21:51] And people who've lived here a while, or grew up here, whine if you ask them to travel more than 5 miles from home. Meanwhile, I'm like, really? try driving 45 minutes just to buy jeans. [21:51] As for perception of distance, yeah. I saw somewhere that Europeans are people who think 100 miles is a long distance, while Americans are people who think 100 years is a long time. [21:52] That pretty much and fairly accurately applies. [21:52] But, yeah.. Coptic. They think even the orthodox are too new-fangled. [21:52] Agreed [21:53] I went to a Sikh temple about 2-3 miles from the house once. The hospitality they showed.... holy moly! Dedicant virtues are kindergarden stuff by comparison. [21:54] We have Sikhs here but they keep themselves to themselves. Very insular [21:55] That's sad. Probably due to being targeted so often by those who don't know the difference between them and muslims. They would not turn you away, though. [21:56] The ones here participate in the local Interfaith Council.... I wish I had time to get our grove more involved int eh Interfaith group. [21:56] We have tried to get them to join our World Religion Day but they prefer not to. [21:56] There's a Wiccan priestess and professor at the local community college here that represents all of Paganism at the Interfaith group. [21:57] Down here most people think pagan = Wiccan [21:57] Yeah. That has been the case for over a decade everywhere I have been, including online (and even on the ADF FB page) [21:58] But it's also the reason I wish we had the time to participate. Folks who are open minded enough to participate in INterfaith, need the opportunity to understand that there are more than one "denomination" of paganism just like there are in Christianity and Judaism [21:59] Very true. [22:00] I mean, she's very respectful, and tries to be as generic as possible... but still, it's not the same as having more reps. [22:00] Very true [22:00] This year, they did add a Romani and a spiritualist to the panels. [22:01] IN the fall, they have a series of panels each Sunday for 8 or 9 weeks, culminating in one congregation hosting the Interfaith Thanksgiving Feast. [22:01] Coolness [22:01] We just have a one day celebration in January we call World Religion DAy. [22:02] I love the thought experiment of deciding how we might answer the weekly topics... it's one of those times that, even after 18 years with ADF, I start to hem and haw. [22:02] That's a good start. Can't grow if you aren't willing to take that first step. And growth is always slow. [22:03] One day is about all we can get people to commit to. It has been going on for 20 yrs [22:03] Wow. [22:04] I think the Mormon Church has a lot to do with the Interfaith staying strong here. They're sort of required to attend according to rumor, and they certainly make up the biggest number of attendees to the weekly panels. [22:05] ADF table was next to the Mormons for 5 years before they got comfortable with us.
