[20:22] Any of the Modern Paganism titles on the DP reading list are a good start, but they all have flaws. [20:22] alright. [20:23] The Reading list is a good starting place [20:23] there are several good books on intro to paganism. [20:23] Attending local events is helpful, if you live in an area that has those. [20:23] check out witchvox to see what is in your area [20:24] Also, if you have a local metaphysical/witchy shop, they often will have event boards [20:24] Egadm thanks for reminding me, I have to click our WV page to make sure it stays listed. [20:24] We've gotten a lot of traction with WitchVox, which surprises me for how OLD that place is. [20:25] its a good tool [20:25] Google still indexes them, that helps. [20:25] I've come across a few shops that are very tight lipped about groups [20:25] Usually that means the groups asked them to be tight-lipped. [20:25] a lot of groups are not on there. [20:49] I know many who practice some form of it, don't know if I know enough to explain its subtleties. [20:49] I've only come across a few people who are Asatru one was very mean saying he didn't want to interact with me because I was not Asatru is it that inclusive? The other Asatru I met was nicer and loved conversations with me [20:50] Varies wildly. [20:50] Asatru is a very very broad category that includes everything from "I won't talk to you if you don't have a genetic test that proves you have Icelandic heritage" to "Sure, come have a beer." [20:50] ADF members who work with Norse culture tend to be more open to working with others, not surprisingly. [20:50] There is an ADF Heathenry group on FB, and a Northern Kindred (the Kin of Fire and Ice) in ADF that deal with the typically heathen hearth cultures within an ADF context [20:51] I thought perhaps it might vary but I wasn't sure. So some believe that it depends on the blood and heritage? [20:51] Yes [20:52] Some very much do. [20:52] And some are as adamantly against that as ADF is. [20:52] Racists have hijacked it just like they did Christianity [20:52] But then there's a big new group of Asatruar in Mexico, and none of them look Norse. >8) [20:53] The friendly ones were from Canada :) [20:53] I think all hearth cultures have some groups that might practice a form of genetic/heritage discrimination. [20:53] The Hellenics sure do, sadly. [20:53] Yep. [20:54] There is a Scottish Clan that requires DNA testing to join [20:54] And then, under the "heathen but not Asatruar" umbrella you have the Anglo-Saxon and Continental Germanic/Teutonic groups, who have some similarities but other differences. [20:55] But you see it in non-pagan groups as well. For example, Judaism rarely sees a person join the community, though there are those who leave it...it's considered a genetic thing. You're born a Jew. It's a people, a culture, and also a religion. Some pagan groups have taken this same theology. [20:56] I mean, you even have groups that are gender-exclusive now. :/ [20:56] But most of us are open. [20:56] When i first started, Dianic groups were pretty common around here. [20:56] I know about the gender exclusive groups They are so mean :( [20:57] Those I know claim that the energy of the other sex is different from theirs [20:58] And then the trans issue comes up and throws them into a tizzy. [20:58] :O I never thought of that [20:58] Michigan used to have a very large music festival open only to women, but they chose not to allow transwomen in and they went out of business a few years ago. [21:00] I have a friend who was told she couldn't participate it was either an Isis or Dianic group because she wasn't born a woman got me so upset [21:01] It's been kind of a hot button issue in the feminist wicca sphere for the last few years. [21:01] I wrote an article about that for my Grove newsletter, lemme see if I can find the url. [21:01] Just know, Star, that paganism is such a...vast spectrum, you have all types. There are groups that are really warm, and those that are frigid. But the religion itself is impartial to all. I would never judge a christian by another christian. Same with pagan or another pagan. [21:01] I have a trans friend and a gender fluid friend so I say welcome everyone or no one [21:02] http://shininglakes.org/slnpdf/SLN-spring12.pdf [21:02] Nikita I understand it just makes me sad when I encounter those kinds of people regardless if it's christian pagan or otherwise [21:02] I firmly believe in the right of small groups to make decisions for themselves (aka: independent covens). I also firmly believe that trans* people are whatever gender they say they are. And that's why I am part of a national organization that doesn't care what kind of parts you have. [21:02] I agree. [21:03] I imagine that most of the Pagans who oppose trans inclusion are old and will die off eventually. [21:03] Not so long as there are hateful people to join them [21:04] True. [21:05] I have... very conflicting opinions on trad wicca (which is one of the places you see gender essentialism rear its head) [21:06] I can sympathize. [21:06] Their wars over who lineage is better than whose is amusing to me [21:06] Obviously, the Sky lineage is the best. [21:07] No offense to Land and Sea. [21:07] :P [21:07] If only they were limited to three options. >8) [21:07] I got my first group training from a Gardnerian coven, so it's ... well. It's complicated. [21:08] I started with a coven and grove that worked together so I had many options of styles [21:08] A lot of us started out there. [21:08] Hand crank popcorn popper just died. The smell is awful. [21:09] I've been solitary for the whole time...but started with Wicca. Electic. [21:09] *Ecletic [21:09] My first book on Paganism was the Farrar's The Witches Bible, so ... that's about as traditional as you can get without being in a coven. [21:09] Wicca was what the available information was [21:10] I still have a private practice that has elements that I learned in my coven days. It works, so I keep doing it. [21:10] The first set of books I started with was A book of pagan prayers, the big blue book and Silver raven wolf [21:10] But I was asked not to come back, because of my mental health issues, so I can be a little bitter sometimes too. [21:12] People can be unfairly cruel, but also unreasonably kind. [21:12] Not all leaders know how to handle things [21:12] true [21:12] but I'm sorry that happened LaurenN [21:13] Oops. [21:39] Picked up the Farrar's book and started down a pagan path, would have happily become Gardnerian if that had worked out, and when it didn't, I joined ADF on a whim and decided to throw myself into it for a year and a day. [21:39] And now here I am :) [21:39] I was semi raised as United Methodist and started paganism freshman year in college [21:39] I hated how the churches talked about each other so negativity, when I went to the Methodist church they started saying that seventh days were a cult and I stopped the sermon and stood up and said I was raised in that church and they were not they told me to sit down and be quiet then told me to come in after service I left. [21:41] lol My first interaction with a pagan group was a PPD I was afraid when I got to the gates that I thought it was like the craft and turned tail then I turned back and said naw couldn't be that was a movie, got back to the gate and was terrified that they'd be naked lol left and then thought naw public event couldn't be lol so I went back then my omg I don't [21:41] know anyone so I can't go in alone. Then turned out I worked with three pagans I was already friends with and they took me to the ritual lol [21:41] end I'll be quiet now lol [21:42] No need to be quiet. We are all friends here [21:42] ^ [21:43] :D I just talk a lot when I get comfortable [21:43] Glad you are comfortable.
