Never used it. How is it compared to Microsoft Office? [20:08] [Owlhawk] excellent alternative for those that don't want to throw money at MS [20:10] May have to try it. [20:44] Hello Dale [20:44] How are you tonight [20:44] Good evening Rovena. I’m well, and yourself? [20:45] Doing well. Looking forward to finishing the DP Two more book report rewrites [20:46] Yay! Gods, I need to get back to working on mine. Summer solstice derailed it, and I haven’t gotten back into the swing of things since. [20:47] Trust me I understand that. Got derailed so many times over the years [20:47] What book will you be reading? [20:50] I am doing rewrites on Idiot's Guide to Paganism and Comparative Mythology [20:51] Ok. I have to finish the Triumph of the Moon, and then read The Tain. [20:52] The Tain is on my list of To-Read Books [20:52] What did you do for your hearth culture book? [20:53] Celtic Heritage [20:57] So how was your Samhain? [20:59] Samhain went quite well. We had a good turnout of 30’ish people, and there was a fair amount of positive feedback regarding the ritual. The weather could have cooporated a bit better, but it also could have been worse. [21:01] How was your Samhain, and the weather down south? [21:01] We would kill for that many people. We average 8 people. Weather was wet [21:03] I know the feeling :) . I led the ritual at a local (2.5 hours away) pagan church, and they draw many more people than my prototrove typicalliy gets at home. [21:03] Ritual went very well. Too wet to do it outside. We lost a local Santeria elder just 2 days earlier [21:04] At home, It’s been as few as two of us, or as many as 12. Usually about 4. [21:04] :( [21:05] We average 5 per meeting consistently with up to 10 for rituals [21:06] Meetings have typically just been me, most of this year. The two other members of the protogrove have mostly dropped out of site due to other commitments. [21:08] Been there several spells but now I think we got a solid core. May think about going grove if it holds for another year [21:08] Come January I will have more time to plan classes [21:12] There are two OBOD druid groups, one of which as a reasonably popular biweekly discussion group, and then a Wiccan group that has biweekly or monthly discussions. Dale Frampton, from Appleton, WI. [21:26] Ohh ok. Thought you were so one [21:26] Someone else [21:26] Np! [21:26] Tis alright. There’s not a whole lot of Dale’s out there. [21:27] Ya [21:28] Watching the Giller Prize awards now [21:28] Canadian literature [21:29] Ah, interesting. I don’t think I’ve read a new book in quite awhile, and nothing that would be classified as literature. [21:29] Lol [21:30] Most of the books I read were published awhile ago. [21:30] I just finished a book for the DP [21:31] I’m almost done with my second book. It’s gotten a bit less interesting at the end. [21:31] Which one? [21:31] I feel stupid but I read the idiots guide to paganism [21:31] The Triumph of the Moon. The intro was slow, and the ending seems slow, but the middle was quite captivating. [21:32] :) [21:32] I liked the reference section [21:32] I read the Idiot's Guide as well [21:33] Cool. [21:33] It is okay for what it is. [21:33] I have it on my kobo [21:33] Bought the hard copy for 11$ [21:34] I read A History of Pagan Europe, which I really enjoyed. [21:34] I was thinking of reading that one [21:34] Or the Druids by stuart piggot [21:35] Ô got the [21:36] I got "the myth of matriarchal prehistory" [21:36] There are lots of books I’d like to get around to reading, but i need to focus if I’m ever to get through the DP. [21:36] Have you read it yet? [21:36] I couldn't get past the first 4 pages [21:36] Oh? [21:36] I used it to launch topics in my weekly druid class. [21:36] It screamed at me senses [21:37] It went against everything I had learned at university [21:40] Theories tend to run in circles [21:41] The Triumph of the Moon covered the changing views of people in the 17th/18th centuries towards polytheism, as it transitioned from each of the gods/goddesses being distinct beings, to the goddesses tending towards moon goddesses, and the gods tending towards being Pan’esque. [21:43] Did you think you had to have read drawing down the moon to understand this book? [21:45] No, it was quite independant of Drawing Down the Moon, which, from my understanding, is more a survy of paganism in the 1980’s. Triumph of the Moon is more a study of the influences that led to the formation of Wicca, and some early British Wiccan history. Along the way the author touches on the evolution of high and low magic practicioers, the formation of ritual magical groups and the secret societies, and how each of those contributed to the origin [21:45] of Wicca. [21:47] Perhaps I should take what I wrote, and add it to my notes for the book report ;) [21:47] Good idea [21:48] Definitely [21:49] How many pages? [21:50] 416 with very tiny print [21:50] Dam. [21:51] Yep. It has taken a long time to get through it…even discounting the time I haven’t been activly reading it. [21:51] It took me over a year to read the idiots guide to paganism [21:59] I'm trying to get the books on kobo [22:02] I prefer being able to hold a book in my hands. [22:03] I understand the advantages of e-books. [22:03] I understand. I just have a hard time with print. [22:04] The sentences are too long on the page so I lose my place all the time [22:08] *** RovenaWindsor (Mibbit@sorcery-hvh22r.direcpc.com) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [22:08] *** RovenaWindsor (Mibbit@sorcery-hvh22r.direcpc.com) has joined #adf [22:08] I like the feel of paper…and the smell of old book. [22:13] I got a lifetime sticker to put on mine cause I spent so much. [22:14] They used to send me coupons for every 50$ I spent [22:15] I haven’t been that prolific of a book buyer in many years [22:15] Then they just sent me a letter with the sticker so I didn't have to spend the cash on the yearly fee! [22:16] I was a teacher for 7 years too [22:17] I taught for 3 years. Gave it up when we move here. Metal detectors were not my idea as a learning environment [22:18] Nods [22:19] Where did you move from? [22:22] Small town in western MO (400 kids K thru 12) to Shreveport LA [22:23] Cool [22:24] Small schools can be rewarding but pay sucks [22:25] Wow, that is small. I grew up in a medium sized city and there were 400’ish kids in my HS class. [22:25] :) [22:29] Well, it was a rural farm area. Every year the District threatened to close it and consolidate the kids into a neighboring school. [22:32] I suppose it’s tough working under the conditions of not knowing if you’re job will be there the follwing year. [22:33] I hear what you’re saysing about the metal detectors. My HS didn’t have them when I went there, but my brother who followed me by 14 years had metal detectors to go throughi n the morning. [22:38] I have it off to attend my son’s veterans day event [22:38] Cool [22:41] Just watching my hockey team one [22:41] Lose [22:41] Aww :( [22:42] I got interested in watching hockey near the end of one season…and then I fogot before the next season rolled around and haven’t watched it since. [22:42] Lol [22:42] It's a big thing up here [22:43] Football is here, but I don’t watch it either. I’m not much of a sports person. The Green Bay Packers are more a religion than a sports team, which makes me basically a pariah. ;) [22:45] Yes it's like that here [22:47] We even have street signs put up for our sens mile [22:48] The city or county of Green Bay, own the football team. That’s reather unique, but it prevents them from being bought and relocating elswhere. [22:49] Cool [22:49] I didn't know that [22:51] They’re the only non proffit community owned major league professional team in the US. In order to get season passes, the average wait time is about 30 years. [22:54] Wow. [22:55] That's nuts [22:55] It is. I wasn’t kidding about the team being like a religion up here. I just looked it up, and the 30 year estimate isn’t likely correct. There are 90,000 people on the waiting list, and less than 100 passes turn over each year (people routinely put them in their wills). [22:57] Ya apparently my mom had seasons tickets till 2002 [23:02] What are your plans for the solstice? [23:03] I'm going to two groves rituals. One is an overnight vigil [23:03] I'm regional Druid fir Eastern Canada [23:04] You? [23:04] Cool. I’ll be going to one of our local communities ritual. With the downturn of people in my protogrove, I probably won’t be holding a public winter solstice rite. :( I’m a bit sad, but without commitment from people, I don’t know what else to do. [23:05] :( [23:06] I'd still hold the ritual in case anyone comes [23:07] You're in Michigan? [23:08] We hold it at people’s houses. If we don’t publicise it, nobody would come. What I’m more concerned about is that I might get one or two people, but it will only be me from the protogrove. Doing the whole ritual myself seems a bit awkward, and if the people aren’t familiar, throwing them into parts isn’t a great idea. [23:08] No, I’m in Wisconsin. We’re separated by lake Michigan. [23:08] Oh sorry [23:10] I have friends in Wisconsin, tho I'd be surprised if the were pagan [23:13] Anyhow, I gotta get to bed. [23:13] Nice chatting with you!
