[20:02] Hello [20:02] How's everyone? [20:02] Hello everyone [20:03] [Owlhawk] good. yourself? [20:03] Pretty good! [20:04] not too shabby :) [20:04] :-) [20:07] So what is everyone up to? [20:08] [Owlhawk] maple leafs vs canadiens [20:08] still reading up on the DP manual and related material to eventually start on it [20:08] Two more book report rewrites [20:08] Good stuff! [20:09] Ahh the book reports...the ever misleading lol [20:09] Fyi for future DP folks.....when you do the 3 book reviews, treat them as a book report for the main part and then go e your own review at the end [20:10] Then do...sorry [20:11] [Owlhawk] or combine the two forms. that's mostly what I did. [20:11] Noted [20:12] Basically, but what most reviewers are actually looking for is a report as the main body. [20:13] so an academic kind of essay [20:14] *** MelittaStafford (Mibbit@sorcery-dlkm0t.tn.frontiernet.net) has joined #adf [20:15] Hello everyone! [20:15] [Owlhawk] 'ello [20:15] Ehh....the more academic vs is a review. This is more a what the book is about, and then what you thought [20:15] How is everyone tonight? [20:15] Hello! [20:18] :-) [20:18] I just got back from a trip to Nova Scotia to visit the protogrove out there. I signed for them so hopefully they'll become a grove [20:18] Caught a cold I'm the process lol [20:18] How exciting. [20:18] Well, that part isn't... [20:19] So how has the fall equinox been for everyone? [20:19] Went to two rituals this weekend [20:20] Celebrating this weekend [20:20] I was going to celebrate it tomorrow morning to try and be in sync with the exact time of the event. Am a solitary, so it's up to me really [20:21] *** Drum (Mibbit@sorcery-030qp0.buckeyecom.net) has joined #adf [20:21] Hey all! [20:21] I've got another ritual this weekend lol [20:21] Hello [20:21] Hi Rovena, [20:21] Hi! [20:21] Hi Drum. [20:22] All sounds nice. I am hosting a ritual tomorrow afternoon. I typically host public rituals. However, the Fall Equinox has always been a special time of the year for me so I think this ritual will be a few friends and myself. We are hosting a drumming circle afterwards. [20:22] [Owlhawk] 'ello [20:22] Hello Drum and Rovena [20:22] That's great though thehouseofthoth [20:22] :) [20:22] Hey Drum! [20:22] The Nova Scotia protogrove has all their paperwork done to send in to be approved as a grove! . [20:22] Well fingers crossed all goes well. [20:22] Sounds nice Melitta! [20:23] Happy Almost Autumn Equinox! [20:23] this time last year I went to Avebury and Stonehenge so I'm feeling a bit nostalgic [20:23] Yes I hope so. [20:23] Thanks Sara. [20:23] I loved Stonehenge [20:24] I hope to visit one day. It is definitely on my bucket list. [20:25] I can only recommend it. And England in general. Also had quite a moment in Bath, very unexpected [20:25] I got water from the Atlantic ocean to bring to the 3 rivers festival next year for our unity ritual [20:26] Nice [20:26] 3 rivers festival is our regional festival. [20:28] [Owlhawk] do we have a date for it yet? [20:29] First weekend in June I thought? [20:29] I'd have to ask Lisa to be sure [20:30] [Owlhawk] ok. I need to book holidays soon. need to check on wellsprings too [20:30] so any burning questions this evening? [20:30] I won't be going to wellspring next year :( [20:32] [Owlhawk] I haven't decided yet. [20:32] It's just too far for me to drive this time. [20:32] I have a question concerning the question that I am working on for the IP. The question is: 11. Discuss how one would choose the focus (or focuses) for the Key Offerings. So I guess my question is, how do you select an appropriate offering for the key offering and why? [20:32] Ok! [20:33] Which course in the IP? [20:33] Night owlhawk. I'm gonna nip this cold in the br [20:33] Liturgy 1 [20:33] Bud [20:33] [Owlhawk] good night [20:33] Good nigh Erin. [20:33] Night all [20:33] Night [20:33] *** ErinP (Mibbit@sorcery-e83.ovu.169.142.IP) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [20:34] For one, it depends on who or what you are honoring [20:34] Night Erin [20:34] The key offering in the main offering, so it has to be something - theoretically - that will appeal to the deities of the occasion [20:35] As much as one can determine or understand what that might be, an offering along those lines would be nice [20:35] Currently I have been looking at lore and pretty much trial and error concerning offerings. I record my offerings and compare them so often to track a pattern of what offerings are more desirable [20:35] Good approach, Melitta [20:35] That's a great method [20:36] Ok, so I suppose when writing up my answer I will just talk about tracking my omens in my journal. [20:36] I think what you just said is a good start towards answering that question [20:36] Thank you. [20:36] Drum, making notes now. [20:38] I would recommend thinking of ways other people would come about deciding what they would offer too [20:38] That is a good idea. That would be benifical in helping others continue and deepen the work for themselves. [20:39] beneficial* [20:39] :-) [20:42] One other question that is also rolling around in my head concerns the orgins of the gates. Liturgy 1 IP, question 7, Discuss the origins of the Fire, Well, and Tree, and the significance of each in ADF liturgy. I know that the gates entered into ADF liturgy, officially, in 1991 however, I am not sure why or who made the motion to integrate into our COoR. [20:43] I have the sinking suspicion that this step came from Eliade, but that has not been confirmed. [20:43] That's an interesting question from the DP point of view too [20:43] Drum knows the history best I'm sure. [20:45] I am pretty sure it came from the tradtions of African based religious practice [20:45] The gate opening part [20:45] I have been reading through The Sacred and the Profane in attempts to answer it, but I would also like to approach it from an IE perspective. [20:45] Oh like a veve? [20:46] But look again at what that question is asking [20:47] It's asking about the fire, well, and tree. How was each a part of IE culture? How has this been brought into ADF ritual? [20:47] How interesting. I have often correlated the similarities between our gate opening/ gatekeeper and the use of veves in voodoo. I know that Isaac was fond of African spirituality. [20:48] It came from Isaac and Yoruba [20:48] I think he liked it and found it effective..so if it works... [20:48] So not an IE thing [20:48] Oh ok, duah, essentially the question is asking the purpose and function of each gate [20:49] Ok interesting, I mean I love the symbolism of opening the gates, it is just interesting exploring the history of our COoR [20:50] "so not an IE thing?", I mean [20:50] What else are the fire, well and tree...beyond the gate? [20:50] thehouseofthot holy wells, fires, mountains/trees are entwined intimately with IE culture . [20:51] Thot, it doesn't seem so, but the symbolism definitely is [20:51] They become heirophanies between the sacred and the profane. [20:51] The gate keeper may not be originally IE, but the hallows are [20:51] OK [20:52] Our gates, to a degree, also resembles relics of the three realms land/ sea/ and sky and act as a place on convergence of all three refereed to as the Sacred Center. [20:52] :-) [20:52] Yep [20:52] Was it common for people from ancient IE cultures to interact with psychopomp deities in order to explicitly reach the Otherworld? [20:54] I am going to guess no, but then again, we are not necessarily reconstructionist Druids [20:54] *** ambermdoty (Mibbit@sorcery-4bkb05.om.cox.net) has joined #adf [20:54] It is what we do now [20:55] Psychopomps were at least a part of several cultures lore [20:55] The Gatekeeper either helps open the gates or hold the gates open [20:55] [Owlhawk] I suspect that the Mysteries might have delved into that topic\ [20:55] You might be right, Owlhawk [20:55] I am aware of them being referred to in the lore, it's the interaction aspect that I was left wondering about [20:56] What Mysteries? [20:56] [Owlhawk] Dionysian, Orphic, some of the Roman ones. [20:56] Hi Amber [20:56] [Owlhawk] Elyusian maybe [20:57] ok [20:57] Good evening Sara! [20:58] I chuckle occasionally when I think about what our paleo-pagan ancestors would think if they were to be present at a neo-pagan ritual. I am happy that our practices have evolved into what they are now because it shows the the work is changing and aligning with the needs of the society at the time, however just imagine what their reactions would be. [20:58] Hello Amber. [20:58] :-) [20:58] I agree, Melitta [20:58] Hi, Amber! [20:59] Hello. :) [21:00] Drum, I am glad to know that I am not the only one that thinks about this. [21:01] [Owlhawk] it's an occupational hazard of druidry [21:03] Ok well it was nice chatting with everyone tonight. I now have a few more notes for Lit 1. Thank you all for letting me ask questions.
