[20:33] my original plan was to come up friday, it might not happen until saturday morning though [20:33] northwest oregon, I live in the first rural town west of Portland [20:33] What is Pantheacon? I'm not very well versed in gatherings. [20:33] That's where Phaedra wants to move to... [20:34] Pantheacon is in San Jose, CA [20:34] it's a huge weekend convention of varied faiths [20:34] What v where …. [20:34] sorry [20:34] wiccan, heathen, pagan, reconstructionist, etc. [20:34] [Owlhawk] ah, yeah I likely won't make that one anytime soon [20:34] I would love to go, but it is not in the plan for this year. [20:34] Ah. Sounds a bit big for me. I don't handle gatherings well. [20:34] CaitD, we're on the same page there. :) [20:35] Cait that'll be my query too. But I think I'll be ok. [20:35] I'm too close not to go …. I wish I could get to some of the Central & East coast gatherings though [20:35] Tried to go to the OBOD one in PA a couple years ago. Had a panic attack. [20:35] ohh not good Cait [20:35] that sucks [20:35] I haven't been on the west coast for a while so it'll be a good thing to get to. Though I will have to miss ConVocation [20:35] :\ aww Cait. [20:36] I'd express sadness but I'm honestly not sure *I'm* going to ConVocation yet. [20:36] what's convocation? [20:36] Convocation is the same weekend as Stitches (a big yarn-crafting conference) so no go for me =/ [20:37] A smaller version of Pantheacon held in the Detroit area. [20:37] I would rather go to Stitches I think. >.> [20:37] Stitches rocks (but also very crowded) [20:37] got it [20:37] Which one are you going to? [20:38] On the one hand, it looks bad if the head of the local ADF grove doesn't go to ConVo, especially when the Lansing Grove does. OTOH, I can't flippin' afford it. [20:38] I think I could do a Stitches easier. I know more knitters than I do pagans. [20:38] Stitches West .. it's the weekend after Pantheacon, also in San Jose [20:38] Rob .. affording is more important IMO [20:38] we're not in this to pauper ourselves [20:39] Most of the pagans I know are knitters. I've been told it's meditative. [20:39] PCon is triple the size of ConVo and from what i can tell is more recon-friendly, so I can't imagine why anyone on the west coast would choose ConVo. >8) [20:39] (I think I made up taht word) [20:39] I spin, crochet, knit and weave … [20:39] and it works Tom … makes sense [20:39] :) [20:39] i crochet. it's fun and relaxing [20:40] I think distance is also the thing. If ConVo wasn't RIGHT after Pcon I might have been able to swing it. [20:40] yeah .. that does make it tight [20:40] but I work from a home office so it's super hard to do [20:40] I've never done but I feel like I'd be so proud of myself if I made my own pair of socks. [20:41] and really the only reason for Pcon for me is a great early bird deal on flights through southwest. [20:41] i doubt i could ever afford to fly to a conference or festival [20:41] that's the only real reason. [20:41] so west coast stuff for me [20:41] i miss outdoor festivals, i used to live in NJ [20:41] considering we just demolished and rebuilt our upstairs I doubt I will be going again for a LONG time lol [20:41] I want to get out to more festivals (out of FL) [20:41] you're fairly well located to drive to West Coast stuff [20:41] Trent .. you should come to Eight Winds [20:41] i'm hoping to go to that [20:41] I spin, crochet, and knit. Don't have a loom anymore. [20:42] Cool Cait! [21:46] cool Cait [21:46] What I have found is often times students just are not sure what is actually expected. [21:46] I didn't get past 10k last year though. I had a sick cat, so stopped writing to care for her. [21:46] I'm working on the virtues now. I keep wondering if I should site or just write from my own experiences [21:46] [Owlhawk] meowing demonic entites of ultimate evil are, apparently, important. h [21:47] [Owlhawk] hope it got better [21:47] Not being afraid to try things and then journaling what you tried are most important during your journey. [21:47] I say write from your own experience. It shows applied knowledge. [21:47] I went looking for examples in the norse sagas of each of the virtues, which has made it kind of fun. I quote and then talk about it. I don't know if that's the right way or not but it's been fun. [21:47] Tom, all you have to do for the virtues exit standard is find an objective definition from a source and then write about the virtue in your own words for 125 words. [21:50] I agree Rob. [21:51] I have the wheel of the year book but I've been wandering between reading different hearth culture books. Driving myself crazy [21:51] One thing I'm struggling with is deciding on the books I'll read. [21:51] [Owlhawk] what ones are you drawn to? [21:51] I have read probably 4 times more than I need to but loved it [21:51] If anyone has DP documentation questions we can most certainly talk about those here. Don't be afraid to ask. [21:52] Honestly, not a lot of the ones on the list, which is my struggle. [21:52] I'm simultaneously pushed away from and drawn towards Norse. [21:52] Yes, espically the Modern Paganism book. [21:52] You really can't read too many things from the reading list. They are all pretty great books. You just need to choose one for each category for the reports. [21:53] [Owlhawk] and don't be afraid to discuss what you didn't like about the book. [21:53] Yes, that is fine also, but you have to make sure that you do a report and not just your opinion. [21:54] It's probably been .. almost 30 years since I've done a book report. I'm a tad rusty. [21:54] [Owlhawk] so, back up with references to the book. discuss the book good and bad and give quotes to back you up. [21:54] That is a problem I can relate to [21:55] I’ll second that…apart from one book report I needed to do in grad school a few years ago. Before that, it was many years ago in high school. [21:55] The Modern Paganism books are a bit limited because they have to meet certain criteria for that standard. They can not be too narrowly focused and also have to be accessible. [21:56] For the book reports there is a pretty easy way to do the reports. First you have to convince the reviewer that you read the book. [21:56] Exactly! [21:56] This can very easily be done by a short summary of each chapter. A few sentences about what the chapter was about and your thoughts about that chapter. [21:56] ty ty ty [21:57] You have to make sure that you cover the entire scope of the book in this way. [21:57] You can then give your thoughts. Where Dedicants go wrong is that they write a review and not a report. [21:58] I'm pretty sure I remember seeing 'book review' in the exit criteria page. [21:58] I think that's where I got confused. [22:48] if i win the lottery i'm helping her [22:48] i mean...WHEN i hit the lottery [22:48] ;) [22:48] oh neat [22:49] [Owlhawk] that's the one I'm researching. its got me curious [22:49] Athens GA? [22:49] greece [22:49] Ahh. [22:50] Haven't been there. Spain was gorgeous though. [22:51] oh..i'd love to see spain [22:51] everyone tells me barcelona is so beautiful [22:53] is anyone else getting this snow? [22:53] i'm in boston [22:54] [Owlhawk] 2 or 3 feet of snow in a day is perfectly normal! [22:54] haha! [22:54] I was up that way a week ago. My family is all up there too. [22:54] oh really?...yes we all just got rocked. [22:54] [Owlhawk] Should I mention tha I'm on the bottom tip of the Georgian bay, not far from Lake Huron? [22:54] My aunt is in Arlington, and is entirely snowed in. [22:54] but i'm so glad we didn't lose power [22:54] oh yes! she's right next door [22:55] wow [22:55] lake effect snow? [22:55] [Owlhawk] and that we measure snow by the foot up here. [22:55] [Owlhawk] yup [22:55] yes...well nothing beats buffalo last year... [22:55] I don't get a lot of snow here, but I grew up in NH. [22:55] [Owlhawk] a stiff breeze gives us snow. I laugh at the south [22:55] that was unreal [22:56] [Owlhawk] Uhmm...actually we kinda beat that....but not all at once. We literally lost track of houses [22:56] oh no [22:56] [Owlhawk] last winter. it was insane. Two or three counties closed for January [22:56] Snow shuts this area down for days. [22:57] oof [22:57] [Owlhawk] it takes a serious amount of snow to bother us. 2 or 3 feet? bah. that's a day or two. Hell, the city won't close, just the highways in and out. [22:58] oh my [22:58] i had today off of work...but i'll be treking through it tomorrow [22:58] [Owlhawk] Friend of mine says that we close roads to save the non locals [22:58] luckily it's 6minutes door to door [22:58] a 6 min walk [22:58] [Owlhawk] lol. that's awesome [22:58] but tomorrow i'll give myself 15 minutes to get there. [22:59] yeah i'm so spoiled from living so close to work [22:59] i just roll outta bed and walk in. lo [22:59] l* [23:00] I miss snow, really. [23:00] where are you Cait? [23:01] South Carolina. [23:01] niceee [23:01] so no shoveling for you [23:03] We don't own a shovel, though occasionally we get several inches. The last time that happened, I had to use a cookie sheet to shovel the cars out. [23:03] oh wow! [23:04] that's funny [23:04] Yeah, until you have to do it. horrible on your back! [23:05] yes it is...last year when i was shoveling...i wore myself out within 5 min. [23:05] makes me want to take a hairdryer to it [23:05] Hah! Isn't that why they make snowblowers? [23:06] i've never used one [23:06] lol [23:07] oh i just read your message...where in NH? [23:07] Derry, and then Goffstown. [23:07] yes..i went camping near there [23:07] i know goffstown [23:08] I went to high school there. [23:09] ok [23:09] do you know...autumn hill [23:09] i guess its a campground [23:09] i thought it was near there [23:09] but it was so long ago [23:12] I have a vague recollection of it, yeah. I wasn't a camper though. [23:15] i'm a bad camper [23:15] lol [23:15] My idea of camping is the La Quinta Inn. ;) [23:16] lol! me too! [23:23] ok..i'm off to bed [23:23] nice chatting with you. [23:23] Sleep well and stay safe in that snow! [23:23] yes! i will [23:23] you too x [23:23] *** laoise (Mibbit@cd0ff635.bstnma.east.36f5c1fe.net.hmsk) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [23:25] [Owlhawk] Well, I'm off as well. good night [23:25] Goodnight. *** Closed channel log for #adf at 27/01/2015 11:25:54 PM
