[19:39] Good so far. I'm planning on sharing via the lists soon [19:43] I'm starting to feel a stronger connection to the ancestor spirits lately [19:44] I do have a question actually [19:44] [Owlhawk] shows you're actually doing the work [19:44] [Owlhawk] ok [19:45] Is it normal to incorporate your patron deity into ritual [19:45] or is that more for a devotional setting [19:46] I'm just thinking about having a conflict between a patron and a Deity of the Occasion [19:46] [Owlhawk] I've always thought that type of thing is an individual preference. [19:46] *** Eiblyn (Mibbit@6dfaaad0.dsl.8a5bc10a.net.hmsk) has joined #adf [19:47] *** Eiblyn is now known as BridgetteAdkins [19:47] [Owlhawk] I don't feel the need to include my 'patrons' in every ritual i do. For Group ritual, it is definitely not common to include individual patrons in every ritual [19:47] It's something that occurred to me today [19:48] Okay [19:48] Can you imagine how long group ritual with 10 people would be if each one had to make offerings to 3 patrons plus the DotO? [19:48] [Owlhawk] exactly\ [19:48] That's about the same thing I was thinking. Just needed a bit of a confirmation. [19:48] I've never been a part of a group or been at a group ritual [19:49] [Owlhawk] or 50, or 150? [19:49] most of my stuff will be solitary so I was curious [19:49] Makes sense [19:50] [Owlhawk] as a solitary, write rituals that you are comfortable with. if you feel that you should include your patron in your rituals then maybe offer to them during the opening, perhaps after the Earth Mother for instance. That way they are honoured, but not part of the main working. [19:50] *** Brendan (Mibbit@6ca5f065.14055a72.24.192.imsk) has joined #adf [19:51] Well, there is the section that in public rituals is open for generalized offerings. That would be an appropriate place to make small offerings to them. [19:53] [Owlhawk] yes, but not all rituals will include that. [19:53] Alrighty. Makes a lot of sense. I don't really have a patron myself...at least none that my conscious mind has responded to. Just for future reference, I do appreciate it. [19:53] [Owlhawk] no problem [19:55] [Owlhawk] I've been to rituals with 200 people. there was no section for generalized offerings from the participants. sometimes it really isn't feasible [19:57] *** BonnieCyr (Mibbit@6a8c81d5.dhcp.oxfr.ma.4e125616.com.hmsk) has joined #adf [19:57] [Owlhawk] 'ello [19:57] hello [19:58] howdy bonnie [19:58] I just meant that if you look at some of the rituals online, many of them have that section there and so you can see where in adapting for an individual ritual you could include it. [20:00] [Owlhawk] the other thing that comes to mind is don't worry about not having a patron. [20:01] I sorta see it as like when you start at a new school and walk in the cafeteria. You don't immediately know who you want to eat lunch with. [20:01] And the first table you try might not be the one you stick with over time. [20:01] [Owlhawk] Ian wrote a really good blog entry about it this week that i encourage people to read. [20:02] Oh yeah. I'm not worried about it. [20:54] I'm focused on this weekend first and then Yule :) [20:54] I'm stoked [20:56] How many people are you expecting? [20:57] It fluctuates ritual to ritual, but we typically get around 15 [20:58] ^what he said [20:59] that's a good sized group [21:00] I'm not even sure how many we are expecting yet, but would be surprised if we hit 15 [21:04] [Owlhawk] 15 is a good size. You'll get there eventually Sara [21:06] I'm hoping for better weather this year. Last year we got hit with a big snowstorm and had to reschedule last minute so we only had 6 or 7 [21:06] we fluctuate actually, sometimes more and sometimes less [21:07] last Yule was actually a larger one actually [21:08] now that I'm not driving 3 hours each way for ritual it's a lot easier. [21:08] [Owlhawk] lol [21:08] yea that's a lot of drive [21:08] [Owlhawk] that's about how long i would need to drive to join a grove. [21:09] people around here will hardly drive an hour to get to ritual [21:10] I'm spoiled, I'm 5 minutes from the local pagan shop/community center. [21:11] I drive about 30-45 mins to get to a central spot, even though it would be easier for me to be closer since I bring all the stuff with me and do the prep work [21:12] I sometimes become really frustrated at people who don't go to things because of "distance" when it's not that far (to me). [21:12] I have to remember I grew up in the smallest state in the US [21:12] so distance and traveling is easy peasy having lived in huge cities as an adult. [21:12] plus if you really love something, you don't care how long the drive is. [21:13] [Owlhawk] the problem for me is cost. The drive isn't the major obstacle [21:13] I don't mind the driving part, but if the kids are in the car Ariana Grande eventually gets played [21:14] i get annoyed at the distance thing, because EVERYTHING around here takes ages to get to. [21:14] and i have a kid, they make it tougher [21:15] i guess it's just an hour or two isn't bad 8 times a year [21:16] 3 hours is pushing it [21:17] [Owlhawk] Just a wee bit. at that point it's probably time to start a grove [21:17] yup [21:19] lol [21:19] there was a grove 40 minutes or so one way [21:19] or in NYC an hour the other way [21:19] [Owlhawk] lol [21:19] but Charter Oak was worth it. [21:20] they're my family just as much if not more than three cranes was. [21:20] but I did miss ritual in bad storms lol [21:20] that is great you did it :) [21:20] [Owlhawk] yup, when you can't see the driveway let alone the road or the car, it's time to stay home. That was January last wintere. [21:21] yea, that's crazy [21:22] Yep that was Yule last year. [21:26] [Owlhawk] I'm hoping this year the weather isn't as bad, but i'm not holding my breath on it [21:28] we will probably have nice weather, one bonus of fl livin [21:30] It won't snow in the northeast ever again, I bought snowshoes so rest easy [21:30] [Owlhawk] i still think we should ship you snow [21:30] [Owlhawk] lol. i bought snow tires finally [21:30] [Owlhawk] I'm in southern ontario through, not the north eas US [21:30] lol owlhawk, no thanks [21:30] lol [21:31] [Owlhawk] 1st snow tires i've bought in 25 years of driving... [21:31] this weekend is going to be nice! I'm excited [21:32] [Owlhawk] weather wise? [21:32] yes and hopefully otherwise as well. [21:33] [Owlhawk] i think we're expecting snow.... I can keep my personal practice alternating between a couple hearth cultures (because I'm indecisive that way) as long as my dedicant work is focused on one? [21:59] [Owlhawk] yes. so long as it works for you. [21:59] You are not required to select a single hearth culture, even for DP work [22:00] I worked with both Gaulish and Norse cultures [22:03] Oh ok cool, I must've mis-read that somewhere. I'm torn between Gaelic and Hellenic, I like Celtic culture but prefer the greek pantheon. Then in winter I keep wandering towards Norse (which may or may not have something to do with playing skyrim or listening to Halgaz Runedance) [22:03] There is a statement in there recommending you select one, under the theory that the program is easier if you are more focused on a single pantheon [22:04] [Owlhawk] that likely makes the essay easier to write I would think [22:04] That makes sense. I'll probably try focusing on Gaelic, I really feel like I should get to know them better. [22:05] My previous practice was Hellenic so maybe it's just familiarity [22:07] [Owlhawk] might be. [22:09] [Owlhawk] exploration can be fruitful. [22:12] Both of those are on the list for hearth culture books, but you would only pick one of those for the book review [22:12] Celtic Heritage - Ancient tradition in Ireland and Wales by Alwyn and Brinley Rees in 1961 [22:13] [Owlhawk] i'm not familar with that one [22:14] I don't think I'd do the book review on it.
