[20:50] Hope you aren't driving and texting [20:50] Limechat [20:51] Now to figure it out since I haven't been on IRC in ages. Nope, my hubby is. [20:51] Sounds fruity [20:51] Hehe. [20:51] AndroIRC [20:51] I use andchat seams to work well on my tablet at least [20:52] Hmm, need to change my name... [21:08] It was what was announced [21:08] Does anyone have any experience with couples Counciling [21:09] I know couples who have gone and it helped them a lot. [21:09] I mean Counciling couples. [21:10] Have 17 graduates hours in guidance and counseling but I only worked with college students [21:10] [Owlhawk] no. You could check with the clergy. that is likely the best place to find someone [21:12] How many clergy does ADF have? [21:12] [Owlhawk] I'm not sure. Never counted them [21:13] Good Question [21:13] That would probably be the best place to check, especially if you are looking for a peer to help in the counseling. Peer being a person of ADF helping or doing the counseling. [21:13] currently under 30 [21:13] You can find a list of clergy on the web site [21:14] *** ChrisC (Mibbit@a62fc844.sd.sd.6ca6b017.net.hmsk) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [21:14] *** ChrisC (Mibbit@a62fc844.sd.sd.6ca6b017.net.hmsk) has joined #ADF [21:14] I'll have to ask around [21:15] as the MA if they have any suggestions of folks who could help out with that [21:15] ask [21:15] MA? [21:16] Members advocate [21:17] ADF is very well organized. :) [21:18] For better or worse [21:18] We try to be [21:19] Are any of you members of the guilds? [21:20] It is good to be organized... or at least somewhat organized. [21:20] I'm in the Bardic guild [21:20] [Owlhawk] I'm in the Brewer's Guild [21:20] Warriors Guild [21:20] [Owlhawk] and Scholars [21:21] yes and in Scholar's [21:21] I'm lazy and have yet to finish my DP [21:21] Neat. So once I finish the DP I can do a guild training program? [21:21] Yep [21:22] I keep getting side-lined while doing my DP... and part of it is my fault. [21:22] I guess I'll wait on guild questions until I finish. It will be a while. Lol [21:22] How are you getting sidelined Chris? [21:22] No harm in questions [21:22] And at the moment, I am not part of any of the guilds. [21:23] Money... that is the biggest issue. I am in San Diego, and cost of living is high here. [21:23] Yikes. Yes it is. [21:23] And I am in a min. wage job at the moment. [21:23] I haven't encountered muscle cost in the DP. How is that holding you back? [21:24] I'm guess extra work hours? [21:24] DP is a spiritual journey and some of us just enjoy traveling [21:25] Lol [21:25] It is getting to events actually. I want to be able to attend the Grove's High Days. I keep getting nixed at hard times of the year by my hubby. [21:25] The journey doesn't end after the DP though does it? [21:25] oh it definitely does not lol [21:26] The DP is just the beginning [21:26] And here is my part, I am too lazy sometimes to do my own rituals. That is changing now though, I am putting my own foot down for myself. [21:26] [Owlhawk] It never ends. [21:26] It is just the beginning. Traveling is a state of mind [21:26] I can understand the festival costs [21:26] Good for you Chris [21:26] If I don't get to a grove organized high day. I can do it myself... learning to be pious is hard. lol [21:26] [Owlhawk] definitely. we're not going to make Midnight Flame this year due to costs [21:27] Actually, I should say that making myself have my own high day rituals is hard... thanking the Gods is easy. [21:27] [Owlhawk] Make it a routine. [21:27] That is one of the benefits of the chats is learning how others do things [21:27] [Owlhawk] I do daily prayers and find that helps me remember things. [21:28] Are solitary ADF rituals very complex? [21:28] That is what I am starting to do. Routine, get ready to go to bed about 1010pm... that way I can do an evening devotional. Get up at 610am, do a devotional first thing before showering et al. [21:28] Piety is hard. Modern lives are so busy it's easy to make excuses [21:28] [Owlhawk] my devotional comes after my shower. [21:28] I can do a solitary ritual in no time flat. you make it as complicated or simple as you like :) [21:28] Solitary shouldn't be hard, I think. There are lots of resources on ADF to help you get started. [21:29] [Owlhawk] I'm solitary and don't find it hard. [21:29] Well...not completely solitary. My hubby joined with me. [21:29] there are also the Druid Moon casts to check out. those are fun, and online [21:29] [Owlhawk] this months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiGGNQ7qn0 [21:29] A ritual online? [21:29] And writing a ritual should be easy, there is a complete write up on COoR which would help you structure the ritual that you write. [21:29] Awesome that your husband is involved [21:29] Yes many [21:29] [Owlhawk] yup. Sara and I have both participated [21:30] Where in SD are you Chris, I'm out there for work a few times a year [21:31] My husband is becoming involved which is helping the change. We are both part of a coven here now, and we are attending the level 1 class together. I have no formal training, just books and books and books. [21:31] I live in City Heights. [21:31] Work at Fry's Electronics... lol [21:31] That's neat about the moon cast. [21:31] Awesome, I'm Don in La Jolla when I'm know town [21:32] Down* [21:32] Nice, wish I lived there. :p [21:32] Yeah no kidding [21:33] My corporate hq is there [21:33] What company? [21:33] Illumina [21:34] I think there is at least one more ADF member at the same company but I have no idea who. [21:34] Ok, I had to look at them because it rang a bell. I have heard of them. [21:35] I think they own half the town at this point [21:36] Not great on the low environment impact thing sadly [21:37] :( [21:37] Tonight was to be a discussion on Piety, right? :) [21:38] How do people reconcile the virtues with the requirements of everyday modern life [21:38] [Owlhawk] They inform my choices. [21:38] Some are easy to reconcile. [21:38] Do you see a conflict? [21:40] Well, for myself I am learning to see around the corners. I had to learn moderation the hard way. [21:40] Well it's a genetics instrumentation company so there is some potential [21:41] On the flip side the can enable a lot of good [21:41] This is true of most things [21:42] I work for a huge payment processing corporation in information security. Usually doing the right thing is easy. I struggle with corporate politics though. [21:42] I can see that [21:42] All you can do is do what is right. [21:43] I don't appreciate it when my boss expects me to withhold information as part of a corporate game. [21:43] I don't have to deal with politics, just a single person who is always unhappy about life and takes it out on everyone around him. [21:43] I can understand that. [21:44] That's rough Chris. [21:44] I work for a city government department. My rights as far as political activism are very limited [21:44] It is ok, I am starting to understand the why of it. [21:45] I have some challenging folks in my workplace. I try hard to be compassionate. Angry or bitter person are miserable. [21:45] That's tough Renova [21:46] There are always some. [21:46] I just try not to own their emotions. They haven't anything to do with me after all. [21:46] It was written to protect the employees but it limits us as well [21:47] To loop around to the Piety thing. I try to think of part of it is holding to the other virtues. Such as compassion. [21:47] I get along with everyone else which is good. It tends to be the way things are. Everyone talks to me, so I hear things and have been piecing together the situation. It makes it easier to be compassionate. [21:48] Compassionate is a good thing. [21:48] So Jason...how does piety work with the other virtues for you? [21:50] Really all of them can be pious acts I suppose. It's a mater of perspective. [21:51] Piety, in my mind is keeping with my view of the Druids path at all times [21:52] That makes sense. [21:52] I see Piety and Spirituality as two side of one coin - Piety is the outer and Spirituality is the inner [21:52] Vision and hospitality for instance. When dealing with work relations. Am I truly trying to see this persons point of view, am I giving them the time and attention they are due [21:53] That's a great explanation Renova, much better than mine. [21:54] So you see piety as the outer expression of your inner spirituality? [21:54] Yes. [21:54] That is probably the best way I have heard it expressed. [21:55] I see Piety and Hospitality as being similar, with the difference is that Piety is hospitality towards the kindred, whereas hospitality is towards other people. [21:55] I am often the only page my coworkers know. I look to Piety to help guide that I am representing that well and not just for my own benefit [21:55] Good, Jason. [21:56] That's the thing...even though it seems that a single person can't change much, our sphere of influence is much larger than we think. [21:56] I would say Piety is hospitality towards my path and my order which includes the Kindred. At least in my mind Chris [21:57] One little hole in a dike doesn't mean must but a thousand little holes can breach it [21:57] A sample of one among scientists is a very influential sample [21:57] I recently went to Japan with my Sensei. He told us that we may be the only Americans people we encounter ever meet. So be mindful of representing more than just ourselves. [21:58] What art do you study tercenya? [21:58] Very true [21:58] Ninjutsu and traditional swordsmanship. [21:58] Tercenya, the same applied when I was in the Navy. We may be one ship pulling into port, by our actions we represent the American people at large. [21:59] Holy crap, what school? [21:59] Enshin itto ryu [21:59] I study under the bujinkan [21:59] I was happy to be a good example, rather than going out and carousing... Myself and two Marines went out, learned about the people and culture, and did fun things like ice skating in the middle of the desert in an open rink in Dubai. [22:00] Oh...lol...bujinkan for ninjutsu. [22:00] ChrisC, ach, I remember too many of my shipmates being bad examples to the locals. [22:00] We trained with Hatsumi while in Japan. [22:00] That's awesome Chris. [22:00] Yeah, same here Dale. I wouldn't and couldn't. [22:01] I study under Dennis Mahoney and Mark Davis in Boston [22:01] Both students of hatsumi [22:01] Small world [22:01] ChirsC, What years were you in? I was in from 1990 to 96. [22:01] John Owsiak in Columbus GA, who is a student of Richard Van Donk. [22:02] 1992 tp 1996 [22:02] Awesome [22:02] to even [22:02] It is a small world for sure. Lol [22:02] Where were you home ported, Dale? [22:02] What were you doing in the Navy Chris? [22:02] I started Nuke, then Mom got sick... /sigh [22:02] I served in the Navy in Canada. (I grew up there. ) [22:03] Norfold from 1992 to 1996. I was an ET Nuke [22:03] I ended up being in Deck dept when I came off leave. [22:03] School in Orland for 2 years, then upstate NY, then Norfolk. NY was the best, I loved that area. [22:03] Orlando [22:03] I didn't get to finish Nuke, though I was also going to be an ET... lol [22:04] Orlando was cool, though I was there in the summer... black flag days suck [22:04] Bummer. At least they didn’t hold you to the 6 years. Though in port we were usually on 2 or 3 section duty…mostly 2 section. [22:04] Whereabouts in NY Dale? [22:04] Balston Spa, near Saratoga Springs. [22:05] Ah cool. I taught at a college near there for six months. (Cobleskill) [22:05] Since I was in Deck, we were in 4 section I think... I ended up on a gator [22:05] So the more I think about it, does anyone else see a comparison between Piety and Mindfulness? [22:06] Lucky you :) We were in Oslo Norway for 3 days, and the only day I had off was Sunday, and just about everything was closed. [22:06] Mindfulness is required to be virtuous I think. [22:07] Is it? Or is it it just being aware so you can realign yourself? [22:07] I’m quite ADD…mindfulness is a challenge for me. [22:07] I need to bid y'all a good night. Last one out, please turn out the lights and lock the door. [22:07] I'm with you there Dale, ADHD and dyslexic [22:07] Later Renova [22:08] Mindfulness and awareness seem to be two sides of the same coin. [22:08] [Owlhawk] good night [22:08] Night Owlhawk. [22:08] [Owlhawk] ADHD can be coped with. [22:08] Like Piety and hospitality [22:08] Good Night Rovena [22:08] I mange ok [22:08] And Owl [22:09] Night owl and rovena [22:09] [Owlhawk] I'm not going, I was saying good night to rovena [22:09] Oh. Lol [22:09] [Owlhawk] I haven't used meds for ADHD since I was 16 or so [22:09] ADHD and and dyslexic here too. [22:09] My mistake…too much conversation in a small space that I missed who was leaving :D [22:09] lol [22:09] Martial arts helped me a lot. [22:09] Never been medicated [22:10] Ditto for me Jason. [22:10] I actually don't approve of it except in extreme cases [22:10] I tend to avoid meds on principle ... Unless absolutely necessary. [22:11] [Owlhawk] I was diagnosed very early and my mom is a nurse so she knew how to vary the dosage safely [22:11] I was for a week in middle school, but I apparently told my parents that I didn’t like how I felt, and so I stopped. It’s occasionally a challenge to keep focused, but I manage. [22:11] [Owlhawk] I was diagnosed sometime around 1975 - 1977, so meds were automatic [22:11] I agree focus is an issue. But it's all about developing tools [22:11] I have developed lots of coping skills over the years. Getting enough exercise helps too. [22:11] [Owlhawk] yup. [22:12] [Owlhawk] I also find alone time is necessary on a regular basis [22:12] This would have been in 6th grade, around 1983. [22:12] I think there is a lot of ADHD in both tech and paganism [22:12] *** rovena (Mibbit@6ca5ecc2.a55580.67.143.imsk) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [22:12] [Owlhawk] I think it's very over diagnosed now [22:12] I hear that owl [22:12] I don't know about paganism but tech for sure. [22:13] [Owlhawk] I would tend to agreee with paganism as well. [22:13] The internet really seems to foster ADD type behavior. [22:13] Really in my area they seam to be abandoning add for autism spectrum [22:13] It's actually seen as a disability when it is simply a different way of perceiving the world. [22:14] It just doesn't work well with the "sit down and shut up" kind of society we live in. [22:14] [Owlhawk] ADD is on the autism spectrum [22:14] [Owlhawk] but, then again, most things seem to be on that spectrum now [22:14] When I was a kid in the states the changed it from a learning disability to a learning difference [22:15] Yeah I don't agree with add having anything to do with autism [22:15] They still haven't really changed education to allow for differences sadly. [22:15] They just slap a label on a kid and medicate. [22:15] No, public education at least is still in the post War manufacturers mindset [22:16] I have to go as well, we normally watch a show as we eat dinner... Dr. Who... And we have the last two episodes of season 5 to watch (since I can't do "to be continued") [22:16] Yep. Industrial revolution factory style. [22:16] Night Chris [22:16] Night Chris.
