[20:21] <Victoria_Leona> I ... am .. a bad druid .... I don't know the names of most of them
[20:22] <Nikita> lol, that doesn't make you a bad druid. Druids learn, all the time. They seek knowledge. Surely, you will come to discover their identities one day.
[20:22] <Nikita> Oak is a nice one, Rovena. What about the Oak attracts you to it, over the others?
[20:23] <rovenawindsor> There is too much knowledge for one person to have it all
[20:23] <Nikita> This is true.
[20:23] <rovenawindsor> I like the shade it gives and the mistletoe I find in it
[20:23] <Victoria_Leona> RovenaWindsor ... thank you :)
[20:24] <Victoria_Leona> we have a tree outside our apartment that's very nice and has very pretty flowers. I should find out what it is
[20:24] <LaurenN> My favorite tree is whatever one I happen to be talking to at the moment

[20:25] <Nikita> You should! It'll also help you connect with the Nature Spirits. If you do the DP, one of the reflection papers is on efforts to learn about the local ecosystem.
[20:25] <LaurenN> but I happen to have a very fond place in my heart for live oaks (the long spindly ancient ones that touch the ground) and wiillows
[20:26] <Nikita> Willows certainly have a mysterious grace about them. I always think of Grandmother Willow fondly.
[20:26] <Victoria_Leona> I've done the DP :) We lived somewhere else then

[20:27] <LaurenN> aww, link busted
[20:27] <Nikita> Ah. You can try looking at one of the State or local nature guides.
[20:27] <LaurenN> it's a link to A&M's century tree, which is a very old live oak (though not as old as some of the ones down Rovena's way)
[20:29] <Nikita> It's rather magnificent. I once saw, I believe it was a giant sequoia, ridiculously old, at the museum of natural history in NYC. It was only the base.
[20:29] <Victoria_Leona> ohhhhh
[20:29] <Nikita> But the thing was HUGE.
[20:30] <Victoria_Leona> I love big trees
[20:30] <Victoria_Leona> I've gone walking in the redwoods a few times ....
[20:30] <Victoria_Leona> it's just ..... amazing
[20:31] <Nikita> Can't say I've ever really seen a big tree. Large rock structures, that's about it.
[20:31] <Nikita> I really want to walk into a forest that seems to scrape the heavens, though.
[20:31] <Victoria_Leona> come out here and I'll take you
[20:31] <rovenawindsor> Europe has some really old, large trees
[20:32] <Victoria_Leona> I can imagine!
[20:32] <Matt_Seneca> I've never had the pleasure of seeing an old tree folk. Most don't get to high 'round these parts. Mostly low trees and swamps :)
[20:33] <Victoria_Leona> where are "these parts" Matt?
[20:33] <Matt_Seneca> I've always wanted to just go and "get lost" in the forest though. And that would be Central Florida (formerly South Florida)
[20:34] <LaurenN> No "tall" trees here either Matt (Houston), but some of the live oaks get very sprawly if they're let loose long enough
[20:35] <LaurenN> it's not old or even medium growth forest though

[21:30] <Rovena> I am a daughter of the Morrigan. So birds are important to me.
[21:30] <Matthew_Seneca> Hello again.
[21:30] *** rovenawindsor (rovenawinds@sorcery-bmi30v.direcpc.com) has joined #adf
[21:30] <Rovena> Hawks have always been around me as an adult
[21:30] <Rovena> As a teenager it was buzzards
[21:31] <Rovena> You could be right, Matthew
[21:31] <Matthew_Seneca> I can say I've always found buzzard to be somewhat majestic and intensely necessary for me.
[21:31] <LaurenN> buzzards are *great*
[21:32] <Matthew_Seneca> It might be my tendency to root for the underdog and many have strong misconceptions about the buzzard
[21:32] <Rovena> I find them to be beautiful fliers
[21:32] <Matthew_Seneca> I'm attempting to suspend my belief about Freyja until I learn more about her from the lore.
[21:33] <Rovena> We have used them as gatekeepers.
[21:33] <Matthew_Seneca> They never seem to exert themselves
[21:33] <Rovena> Lore is important but just as we grow and change I think the Gods do as well
[21:34] <Matthew_Seneca> There was one once that I had found hurt and there wasn't anything I could really do to help it. I left some food water nearby until one day he was just gone.
[21:34] <Matthew_Seneca> Another topic that's been on my mind Rovena
[21:34] <Matthew_Seneca> How do we live in the religion of our forebears in the present...reconciling the past culture and ideas with the current. These are ancient dynamic beings
[21:35] <Matthew_Seneca> I feel as though our image of them is trapped in the past at times.
[21:35] <Rovena> You do what you can. You showed compassion and that is important
[21:35] <Rovena> It is our perception that is trapped not the Gods
[21:35] <Matthew_Seneca> We don't allow them to evolve with us and our times. It creates a distance for me at times.
[21:35] <Rovena> Like a parent who refused to see that their child is an adult
[21:37] <Matthew_Seneca> I guess I could put it this way, I've been playing with the attributes I know about the Gods in my mind and thinking about how that would apply today.
[21:37] <Matthew_Seneca> If I see Odin as a Wanderer, what would that look like nowadays?
[21:37] <Rovena> Good approach.
[21:37] <LaurenN> Neil Gaiman had a lot to say about that
[21:38] <Rovena> He would probably have pickup with a camper top
[21:38] <Matthew_Seneca> I have heard that name some but haven't had the pleasure to read about it.
[21:38] <LaurenN> he's a fabulous author
[21:38] <LaurenN> if you're into Gods in Modern Context, pick up American Gods
[21:38] <LaurenN> he's not a theist of any stripe, but that book has some really interesting things to say
[21:38] <Matthew_Seneca> I came to think that he could very possibly be a cross country truck driver, a nomad, even a transcient.
[21:39] <Matthew_Seneca> I think that some modern fiction may have important things to say.
[21:39] <Matthew_Seneca> Even the lore was Modern Fiction at one point to some. Not to say it's fake or anything
[21:39] <Rovena> Fiction can often tell the truths that non-fiction can't

[21:40] <Matthew_Seneca> I've often had the thought that writers are NOT the creators just the receptors of the thoughts of those they write about.
[21:40] <Matthew_Seneca> Indeed, American Gods could be the gods in their current form reaching out through Neil.
[21:41] <LaurenN> I dunno what I think about that. As a writer, my creations are my own, and in some ways, they are puppets that dance for me. In others, they take on a life of their own.
[21:41] <rovenawindsor> Many authors would agree with you
[21:41] <LaurenN> It's both a conscious and a subconscious process.
[21:41] <Matthew_Seneca> I don't mean it as a hard and fast rule.
[21:42] <Matthew_Seneca> But as a writer myself I have had these explosions of inspiration that have come from "nowhere" and seem to be outside myself
[21:43] <Matthew_Seneca> Possibly we are even remember a different realm that really exists that we've lived in, during another life. But maybe my imagination is going too far
[21:43] <LaurenN> I'll take inspiration however it comes, honestly.
[21:44] <Matthew_Seneca> I like to muse. Just opening the windows so to say.
[21:46] <Matthew_Seneca> If I offend I do not mean to. None of this is my actual opinion. Just random thought's that occur at times.
[21:46] <Matthew_Seneca> Fun ways to look at the world
[21:47] <Rovena> If you offend, I will speak with you. Until then we are all just tossing ideas around.
[21:47] <Rovena> Learning needs freedom
[21:48] <Rovena> Without freedom it is just meomrization
[21:48] <LaurenN> Yeah, you're fine. THis is a fun space to just chat :)
[21:49] <Matthew_Seneca> Being apologetic has become a defense mechanism. I have very few free minded people around me and they tend to get...irate with my ideas lol. I just respect this community more than to let it not bother me.
[21:49] <Matthew_Seneca> I remember speaking with you two several times a year or more ago.
[21:50] <Rovena> Been there myself.
[21:50] <Rovena> I have been around this chat room for many a year
[21:51] <Matthew_Seneca> I hope to be more involved with the different chats more often. Seeing as how I can make it to more of them now.
[21:52] <Rovena> Cool. You are welcome at any of the open chats
[21:54] <Matthew_Seneca> I think I have run my fingers raw tonight though! And with that I will have to say Adieu and I hope to talk you ya'll again soon!
[21:54] <Rovena> Catch you next time
[21:55] <Matthew_Seneca> Have a wonderful night! And I hope to see what your developing soon Lauren. Looking forward to it.
[21:56] <LaurenN> Night!
