I tend to mark it's passing, but it's not the grand affair as some of the others. To be honest I can almost forget it's upon us. [20:08] Hello Owlhawk [20:08] How did yours pass? [20:08] Hio Owlhawk! [20:08] Protogrove did it inside due to heat but it was nice for 3 people [20:09] *** RobHenderson (Mibbit@sorcery-gka4di.mi.comcast.net) has joined #adf [20:09] Hello Rob [20:10] Hi! [20:10] Hio Rob [20:11] The usual summer attendance levels? [20:11] [Owlhawk] looks like [20:12] Heat is zapping people energy even for keyboarding [20:14] Any questions about the DP? [20:15] I'm good [20:17] just trying to mentor it [20:17] Hmm, I haven't heard from anyone I'm mentoring for... a while. [20:18] I check in on my student every couple of weeks trying to keep her focused [20:20] I would have little talent at such a thing. [20:21] What's it like to mentor a DP student? [20:21] I go hands-off and just answer any questions they send me. [20:21] Usually it's a question I've seen before, but once in a wile they surprise me. [20:22] Mine had asked to have a bit of prodding [20:24] Each situation is different. Every mentor had their own style as every student has different needs [20:28] So what plans does anyone have? [20:29] Not much for August! [20:29] Stay inside and try not to die from the heat, mainly. [20:30] I hear you. It is a good plan [20:31] I'm trying to get some legal questions asnwered so our protogorve anc grow up. [20:32] Ah, anything I can help with, or is it a local dealy? [20:33] Hi! [20:34] Michigan was similar re the word [20:34] "church", officially we're the Druidic Chruch of Shining Lakes Grove, ADF [20:34] But then Cedarson and Midnight Sun said they had no problem with it, so I think it was just the employee we got stuck with. [20:45] Definitely [20:46] Wre did ours two days ago, but it was still good. >8) [20:47] [Owlhawk] my Lughnasadh was the Kaleidoscope Gathering Festival, for 5 days, plus an extra 5 days camping before hand [20:47] My grove has ours this coming Sunday...I did a little solitary ritual yesterday though, as I'll be leading the Grove ritual, and it's harder to get into it when leading. [20:47] Oooo, camping for Lughnasadh, how perfect! [20:48] [Owlhawk] with roughly a thousand other pagans [20:48] Just you, the wife, and 998 of your closest friends... [20:48] [Owlhawk] bang on! [21:02] That is the nice thing is that we can be from all over the world [21:03] Half an hour is a long time if we are all chatting. Red Oak Grove is my first grove, and I may be biased, but I love them and they are my first Druid Family. If it weren't for them I would have never found ADF. I highly recommend looking them up if you are ever around. [21:03] Any other Dedicants? [21:03] i likely will...where i am right now there's barely any pagans at all [21:04] COmpleted mine in Deecmber [21:04] i have to drive for 3 hours to get to the nearest grove [21:04] im a little nuts, heh [21:04] Feel very much the same way about Columbia (though I joined ADF before I found my Grove). I'm hoping to have mine finished before Samhain. Three hours is a lot so I hope its worth it. [21:04] Trent, that's some serious dedication, to drive three hours for a grove! Though, it sounds somewhat typical for Cali! (That's what, a trip down the street? XD) [21:05] I drive almost 2.5 hours to get to a local pagan community for the holidays, and then my local protogrove also holds our own on alternate weekends. I’m probalby a little crazy too ;) [21:05] I only have to drive about an hour for any events I want, I'm luck here in Jersey. In Michigan if I wasn't running the events it was a two hour drive. [21:05] There was a time when I was driving 3 hours [21:06] heh...around here there's a tight cluster of towns and then...nothing [21:06] and then the Bay Area in one direction, LA in another, and more nothing in a third [21:06] Ah, I'm with the Ann Arbor Grove, where were you in Michigan? [21:06] and the ocean in the forth [21:06] I think we may end up near San Diego next time around on the bases, hope there's stuff there. I lived about an hour from Lansing in Mount Pleasant. [21:07] Yep, I know it well. [21:07] Trent, I'm from Palmdale myself, I know the feeling well. [21:07] Seems a lot of ADF members are Solitaries. [21:08] Around 60%, last I heard. [21:08] Many people just don't live near other people and then there are the ones that prefer doing it on their own [21:08] Makes me sad but at least there's the Would Wide Web. [21:08] yeah [21:08] What is everyones hearth culture? How did you find yours? [21:08] Yes, the WWW does help [21:08] there is a grove in San Diego [21:09] Mine is Celtic. A lifetime interest [21:10] Celtic here as well, with a dash of Norse thrown in. Same as rovena, I've been fascinated by Ireland my whole life, a fascination that was handed down by my mother...but where she likes learning about Christianity in Ireland, I was drawn a very different direction, haha. [21:10] don't really have one right now [21:10] [Owlhawk] Hellenic here. I'm in Ontario [21:11] Hellenic. The Greek gods started talking to me when i was age 8, and they've always had the most appeal to me. [21:12] I agree which is why I am trying to learn Scottish [21:13] Blood or no blood, you have to work with the spirits that call you, I say. [21:13] I work with four deities myself. Danu, An Dagda, Morrigan, and Cernunnos. I'm not sure what to call the 'culture' but I'm happy with where I'm currently at. [21:14] [Owlhawk] I'll echo Rob on the spirits that call to you [21:14] And those would be your ancestors of choice [21:14] I like that, and they called loudly [21:14] And I am being called elsewhere, speaking of calls. Night all! [21:14] And the spirits that call you aren't always of the same hearth culture! I work with Lugh, Artemis, Odin, and Fortuna myself..... Hubby follows Celtic and Norse [21:18] a few years ago I didn't believe in gods at all so working with four while believing is a long way for me to come [21:18] Ironically, Irish celtic, Norse, Hellenic, and Roman are the four hearth cultures our grove follows. It almost seems like I'm trying to collect one from each culture! But in reality, as I've been working with my Grove, the other three deities (besides Lugh) just stepped forward. [21:20] They can make a believer out of one for sure [21:21] anyone do anything for Calan Awst/Lammas? [21:22] I had a solitary Lughnasadh ritual last night. On Sunday, I and my co-leader are leading ritual for our Grove. We'll be having games for Tialtiu! [21:22] Our protogrove celebrated a Lughnasadh on Saturday. [21:23] what sort of games do you play? [21:23] We are only 3 people and with the heat, athletic games are not in our cards [21:24] This year we're doing a sort of bean bag toss. (Co-leader suggested kaber toss, but that doesn't seem quite practical!) Last year we attempted a spear toss, and the year before was archery... [21:24] Good variety of things [21:25] last year my grove went to the middle of the new jersey devil territory and we killed zombies. We have our celebration on the 13th [21:25] i didn't go to a Lammas thing [21:25] i had to get my wife from a train station in LA [21:25] so i guess i harvested her? lol [21:26] That is one way to look at it [21:26] Mauri, that's awesome! Trent, haha, I think that counts! [21:26] sounds a bit like a LARP, Mauri [21:26] it tots counts [21:27] heh [21:27] and it was a board game [21:27] do you guys ever do community rituals? [21:27] i see :) [21:27] My protogrove does all eight [21:28] We do all eight rituals for the public. [21:28] my grove does one for every sabbat but at the overnight sabbats we also hold a community ritual where we as a group drink together and boast, toast, and vow, all while under the watchful eyes of our grove gods, spirits, and ancestors. [21:29] the protogrove i go to does all 8, though i only can make it sometimes [21:29] 3 hour drive and all :-P [21:29] And Jonathan's wanting to open up more rituals too...we're busy bees... :s [21:30] And we're a couple hours from Kirk's place. He leads public ritual for all the high days, and since it's a bit of a drive several people end up renting a room or a bed for the night. [21:31] I don't mean to make anyone feel bad about their long drives. [21:31] [Owlhawk] I'm a solitary so I only do group ritual at festivals [21:31] I do a lot of solitary work too, meditation daily and ritual three times a week. I've been moving more to daily devotionals though. [21:32] i don't do anything on my own really [21:32] im really more of a "community" pagan right now [21:32] Trent, do you go to Raven's Cry in LA? [21:32] nope, i go to Valley Oak in San Jose [21:33] I've been wanting to go to Raven's Cry but I've never made it work [21:33] again, 3 hour drive ;) [21:33] community is important [21:33] Ah, okay. Just was curious! And yeah, I totally understand. I never made it to and ADF ritual when I lived in Cali...since I don't drive personally. And I've always been a sucky solitary. [21:34] My mentor lives in Cali and it wasn't until I started talking to him that I learned how large that state is! [21:36] It really is huge! I lived in Southern California, it'd take my family two or three days to drive up to Central Washington where the rest of my family was, and most of that time was spent in Cali. Of course, if you live anywhere near LA, it can take three hours just to travel a few miles... [21:36] Thus, me never attending an ADF ritual, though I'd been interested in checking out Raven's Cry at the time. Jonathan and Christina in particular though there were more CG folks there. [21:58] What event? [21:58] Summer Solstice 2015. [21:59] how large do your events get? [21:59] Ah, yeah I was there for that one too! That was a packed one... [22:00] Kirk's rituals can be anywhere from himself and a couple dedicated attendees, to probably around 20 or 30 people... [22:00] my grove usually has about a dozen, but we've had as many as 20 [22:00] That was my first ADF thing. [22:00] I go to Convocation in Michigan and this year there was 1000 people there [22:01] Then life got crazy. Then I went to Eight Winds and this coming weekend I'm going to Many Gods West. [22:01] So life still is kind of crazy. [22:01] I've never heard of these events [22:01] do they cost money? [22:02] Eight Winds is the ADF Northwest festival, and Many Gods is another Northwest polytheist event [22:02] they both cost [22:02] is it a lot? [22:03] I'm not sure, I haven't been able to afford events at all since I started with ADF...(Except for Beyond the Gates, the festival my Grove had at Kirk's, and since I was an organizer I didn't have to pay) [22:04] No, I don't think so. Eight Winds was pretty inexpensive considering it included food for the weekend. [22:04] my grove usually runs about twenty an event [22:04] but that feeds you [22:05] 8W was $60 for the weekend. It cost me more to get there and back because it was a 16 hour drive and I had to stop to sleep in a motel on the way back. [22:05] I'm looking forward to maybe doing Many Gods West next year, Jonathan and I are contemplating doing a Roman Ritual. [22:06] MGW is more because of the hotel room but I'm sharing with someone so that helps. [22:06] a 16 hr drive? wow [22:06] where are these events? [22:06] It's a sliding scale from $80 to $100 for the weekend. [22:07] 8W was camping in the Tahoe National Forest in California near Reno. [22:07] MGW is in Olympia Washington, so only an hour drive. [22:07] oh wow [22:07] States be big out here, yo. ;) [22:07] hahah so true [22:07] that seems like a long way to go, I hope it was worth it [22:08] It was very worth it and not that far in my mind. Then again I love travel and trips. I just needed to plan better because I thought it was only a 12 hour drive. [22:08] It's to far for me...I don't drive! LOL [22:09] I offered space in my car! :) [22:10] I head to Gettysburg every year for a music festival in May. I've also traveled a few time to the Netherlands for music festivals. [22:10] Oh wow, so it's not that far for you at all! haha [22:11] Nope. I grew up in Kansas City and my grandparents were in St. Louis so 5-6 hour drives were common. [22:12] I grew up in michigan but three hours was the longest I'd ever really travel [22:12] now that I'm driving home once or twice a year its 16 hrs, and its always draining [22:12] don't you worry that the long drive will keep you from enjoying yourseld? [22:13] -yourself [22:13] I got my tunes. I got the open road. It works. [22:13] I prefer to take the train but it isn't as accessible as driving. [22:14] Though if I do 8W next year I'll fly to Reno and rent a car. There's too much partying for me to be comfortable driving back alone. [22:14] I hope to get to more events, big and small, and to learn more and do more [22:15] I'd love to hit up more ADF events...I caught the bug with the Beyond the Gates, and I'd love to do some events that don't require me to host... [22:37] is he on youtube? might look him up [22:39] http://blakecarpenter.com/the-videos/ [22:39] cool thanks! [22:41] yw [22:45] Any music/videos you particularly like? [22:47] earth warrior by omnia is still one of my favorites [22:50] +1 [22:50] It seems the sister building is on fire. "E13 AIR260 A10 A5 AIR9 B6 B7 DEP1 E10 E2 E25 E39 E5 E6 L1 L3 L4 M1 REHAB1 SAFT2 STAF10" [22:53] I don't follow the last of that [22:53] sorry [22:53] That's the list of emergency responders. E = Fire Engine. A = Aid (Ambulance). B = Battalion Chief. DEP = Deputy Chief. L = Ladder. M = Medic. AIR = helicopter. And such. [22:54] Basically a large portion of the fire department in Downtown Seattle is now outside my apartment building. [22:55] oh wow [22:55] that's crazy, be careful and stay safe [22:58] I'm 23 stories up. So far no alerts in this building. [23:00] that concept blows my mind [23:00] I've never lived in an apartment [23:00] oh dear [23:00] i've never lived in one 23 stories up :-P [23:01] so you're undead or visiting? [23:02] who, me? [23:05] what do you mean by you don't live 23 stories up when you just said that you were 23 stories up [23:06] I said I was 23 stories up, not Trent. [23:06] I love the view. [23:06] Though I'm buying a house so I'll be back close to the ground again. [23:06] But from here I can see the Cascade mountain range. Mount Rainier and if I go to the other side of the building I can see Puget Sound and the Olympic mountain range. [23:09] oh dammit [23:09] I saw that there were only two of us on a while ago and didn't catch his return [23:09] or my computer glitched [23:09] so sorry [23:10] No worries.
