[19:54] How are you tonight? [19:54] *** ErinLundJohnson (Mibbit@sorcery-nokke6.wa.comcast.net) has joined #ADF [19:54] I'm fine, how are you? [19:54] First time on this thing. [19:54] bbiab [19:54] It is easy to use [19:54] Hiya, new member new to chatting here. :) [19:55] Hello Erin [19:55] Hi Rovena, nice to meet you [19:55] No worry You aren't alone in that [19:55] Not worried, glad to be here. :) [19:56] Newbie here too! [19:56] Coolness [19:56] So, uh, what do we talk about in here? [19:56] Hi Kristen, nice to meet you, too [19:56] Whatever we want to [19:56] I just started my DP and am just sort of winging it. [19:56] the weather to ADF stuff to world domination [19:57] Where is everyone from? [19:57] NW Louisiana [19:57] I'm in Vancouver, WA [19:57] "everyone" ie, you two lol [19:57] I'm in Columbus, OH [19:57] Owlhawk is from Canada [19:57] Are you both members of the ADF? [19:57] I recently joined, yes [19:57] What groves do you belong to? [19:58] Been a member since 2005 [19:58] Technically solitary, loosely associated with the Columbia Grove in Portland, OR [19:58] Hubby is GO of THistle Protogrove [19:58] GO? [19:58] GO? [19:58] LOL [19:58] ECHO! [19:58] [Owlhawk] Grove Organizer [19:58] Everyone is solitary and some have grove time as well [19:58] oh [19:58] k, thanks [19:59] how do you mean, everyone is solitary, Rovena? [19:59] I am not a member yet of any grove, but am considering my local grove Three Cranes and a Proto-Grove called Northern Mysteries [19:59] Think about how much time you spend at grove stuff and the rest of the time you are on your own [19:59] [Owlhawk] the three cranes people are awesoe [19:59] [Owlhawk] awesome [19:59] I know! [19:59] wouldn't know, being new, and not having been a grove member, Rovena [19:59] You can hang with both, Kristen [20:00] That is what I am thinking, rovena [20:00] My primary hearth culture is Norse, and Northern Mysteries is Norse, but 3 Cranes is so vibrant and lovely, I like them, too. [20:00] I hear good things about 3 Cranes [20:01] It is great. Extremely active. [20:01] That does sound great. I love all the support ADF has, and its hospitality. I like belonging to a druid church! :) [20:01] And since my husband and I are looking for a community of friends to belong to, and we have found their rituals so moving, it only makes sense. [20:01] The Norse Kin have their own chat on Wednesday nights [20:01] Oh! [20:02] Do they have that chat here? [20:02] [Owlhawk] yes [20:02] I will have to look into it. [20:02] nifty! Does the Gaelic kin have those weekly chats too? [20:03] So, how do some people have more than one hearth culture? [20:03] They have had one Google hangout and may have more in the future [20:03] not how do, but do [20:03] yes, I heard about the google hangout, wondered if they used the chat feature here also [20:03] I don't, Kristen. [20:04] I was wondering if some people do. [20:04] Not yet thought they say if the Google thing gets too big they will move it here [20:04] thanks Rovena [20:04] Many people have multiple hearths usually two [20:05] The hearth idea is interesting considering the American context, with so many of us being of mixed backgrounds in this melting pot. Honoring the different hearth cultures reminds me of this. I think the two concepts blend well together for us here. [20:07] [Owlhawk] It can also depend on how the Gods feel about the mixing [20:07] People are often drawn to a hearth that is different from their background [20:07] Former member was adopted so has no idea what their background is [20:07] I imagine people are drawn to hearth cultures for a variety of reasons, yes. I was only noting similarity in concepts. [20:07] I have a lot to learn. [20:08] Are the hearth cultures mixed? I had thought they were engaged with on their own terms, I guess. [20:08] I don't know how one "mixes" hearths when different traditions have different creation stories, for instance. [20:08] Rovena, how do you mean, former member? [20:08] I assume they are dealt with separately, but from a belief standpoint, the origin of the universe and who created humans is different in different hearths [20:09] [Owlhawk] Generally Rituals do not mix hearth cultures within them. [20:09] Sure, each culture and its myths constitute its own worldview and way of being in the world. So they could imply different ways of making meaning. If they closely align, they may work well together, though. [20:10] No, I haven't seen an adf ritual with mixed hearths. Was wondering what the mention of mixing was alluding to. [20:10] [Owlhawk] Rituals generally, public ones any way, are dedicated or aimed at a single Pantheon [20:10] that is what I have so far observed, yes [20:11] [Owlhawk] Experiences has shown that this tends to be more preferred by the Kindreds [20:11] In Norse belief, Odin, Vili, and Ve created humans. In Greek? Is it Prometheus and Athena that created humanity? [20:11] Didn't know what you'd meant when you said 'it depends on how the gods feel about the mixing,' Owl. [20:11] oops, Owlhawk [20:12] [Owlhawk] The Gods will make their opinion known about things, including rituals [20:12] How? [20:12] [Owlhawk] Greek has a few myths. [20:12] wasn't sure what kind of mixing you were getting at. [20:12] [Owlhawk] It varies depending on the God and the situation. [20:12] Can you give me an example? [20:12] since I didn't think adf mixes in rituals, which you've confirmed [20:12] [Owlhawk] The Omen is a popular spot [20:13] meaning the gods or hearth cultures might mix in the omens? [20:13] [Owlhawk] Meaning the Gods can, and will, express themselves through the Omen taken during ritual. [20:14] You will get a warning that the mixing is not going well. [20:14] oh sure, that is kind of the point of the omen-taking, yes? [20:14] [Owlhawk] If you feel that mixing hearth cultures in ritual is something you want to try, go ahead and try. I've found that rituals that do so are less effective rituals [20:14] [Owlhawk] yes Kristen [20:15] Oh, ok. Nothing I have tried since I don't work with more than one hearth culture. [20:15] Omen also tells you if your offerings have been accepted [20:15] yes [20:17] Owlhawk, what are your hearth culture(s)? I am compelled toward Norse with Irish secondary, but I have not had any intimate experiences with any gods. [20:20] [Owlhawk] start doing rituals. Daily prayers and meditation. [20:20] [Owlhawk] Work on building relationships with the Kindreds [20:21] During one meditation I had tried to reach out for a patron goddess, there was a goddess, and I asked her who she was. And she wildly screamed "I shall not be contained!" and still have no answer. [20:21] But yes, I need to meditate more. [20:21] sometimes the Gods whisper to you and sometimes they give you a slap up side your head [20:21] lol [20:22] Or scream and turn fiery like Galadriel being offered the ring. [20:22] lol [20:22] [Owlhawk] Take things slowly, there's no need to rush into getting a Patron. It took me 15 years or so to find a Patron of some sort. [20:22] That is totally what she did. [20:23] not everyone has a patron. A patron is like a mentor. [20:23] Ok, Owlhawk. I will try not to be so impatient. [20:23] Many people complete the DP without a mentor [20:23] [Owlhawk] and as Rovena said, not everyone has a Patron [20:24] You can work with a God/dess without them being your patron [20:25] gotcha [20:25] Many people work with one Deity for certain things and another one for other stuff [20:30] We have gotten quiet [20:31] If there's something you already do, like a healing modality, a craft, or a certain profession affiliated with given deities, you might try offering and praying to one of them for assistance with your endeavors, Kristen. [20:33] [Owlhawk] For instance Dionysus is who I pray to when I'm brewing. And Demeter as well. [20:34] [Owlhawk] A celtic deity who works with brewing would be Brigid. She also is a healer and a smith. [20:35] [Owlhawk] There's another celtic brewing deity, but I can't remember the name [20:36] Interesting. [20:37] I will have to think about that. I don't really have a craft. I am a fledgling witch and am a cubicle wench in a library, lol, so I will definitely need to think on it. [20:37] Those can help you build concrete relationships. [20:38] cubicle wench, lol [20:38] so how well does adf druidry work with witchcraft? [20:38] [Owlhawk] Well, for the Norse hearth, start with the Eddas. If you're Celtic orientated then start with the celtic myth cycle. [20:39] [Owlhawk] fairly well actually. [20:39] [Owlhawk] If you mean Wicca, it works fairly well but the ritual structure is very different [20:43] Witchcraft means different things to different people [20:44] Yeah, I am not Wiccan. No problem with Wicca, but I just kinda do my own thing. [20:45] I enjoy trad witchcraft. Gemma Gary, people like her. I am interested in seidr, but I have not researched it enough to say much about it. [20:47] [Owlhawk] The Norse kin have some members who work with Seidr [20:48] *** rovena (rovena@sorcery-6bo8tp.direcpc.com) has quit IRC [Quit: SorceryNet Kiwi WebChat] [20:48] I would find them in the chat room?
