[20:17] it's been stormy.....that's for sure [20:17] It is good as I wasn't trying to pick up work. [20:18] Cool then :) [20:18] just plain hot here, we've gotten our first solid heat-wave of the year *sweats* [20:18] I've got a bunch of OT this week due to an implementation at work ... Saving comp time for more festivals ! [20:18] We have just gotten in the 90s last week for the first time [20:19] Comp time is good [20:19] And I complain about the 80's ... [20:20] Well, the extra time for festivals is great :) [20:20] I have 3 more planned this year ... Work is mostly not crazy so I'm taking advantage [20:20] it's been hot here, but it's normal [20:20] that's fun!!! [20:21] which others are you planning for? [20:21] Druidapalooza, eight winds and Many Gods West ... Sticking to this coast :) [20:22] nice! [20:22] Oh cool, Many Gods West sounds really promising this year [20:23] well I'm glad I got to see you at Wellspring :) [20:24] Wellspring was great! Worth all the bug bites! I think this is going to be a bad year for them [20:25] hi! [20:25] Hello Kia [20:25] Definitely going to try to make at least one East-ish festival a year [20:25] Hi Kia! [20:26] That sucks about the bugs at Three Rivers [20:26] [Owlhawk] not a big surprise given how late spring was in getting here. [20:27] Spring was early here ... But summer is really only just getting going [20:27] [Owlhawk] we were still getting snow at times in May [20:28] Beyond the Gates will be my first festival, I'm excitinervous lol [20:29] I don't know that I'll go to any more festivals this year. i think I need some down time overall. though I love a fun festival [20:29] Awesome Arin, it looks like it'll be a great time [20:29] Wow Owlhawk that is late for snow [20:30] No festivals close to me [20:30] What's this downtime???? [20:30] I'm in the same boat Rovena. The closest is about 12ish hours away. [20:30] hah Victoria....something I'll be taking soon :) [20:30] Aww Rovena ... Are you able to get out to any? [20:31] I end up flying to many ... Miles from work travel help [20:31] Only one closest enough to me is Imbolc Retreat in February [20:31] I go every year to it [20:32] I go every year to it [20:32] Oh cool [20:32] how close is that for you ROvena? [20:33] About 8 hrs driving [20:33] gotcha [20:34] Druidapalooza is like that for me ... I've not driven that far before... This will be an experiment [20:34] [Owlhawk] taking breaks helps [20:35] Yeah ... Planning on audio books and breaks every couple of hours [20:35] I try to visit my Dad once a month It is a 10 hr drive through mountains [20:36] I've done long long drives myself. it's not fun, but take breaks and walk a bit, that helps [20:37] Yeah ... Usually I have my hubby, and he does most of the driving. But he doesn't Druid :) [20:37] hubby doesn't travel [20:38] 10hr drive on your own? That's quite a drive. [20:39] visiting family this weekend will be about 6-7 hours via bus [20:40] I've gone as far as 12 hours one way by myself. It's definitely not my favorite thing. [20:40] [Owlhawk] the most driving I've done is 18 or 19 hours. [20:40] [Owlhawk] straight [20:41] I topped off at 12 hours and was capital-D Done. [20:41] Wow [20:41] [Owlhawk] I drove cab for a decade... [20:41] heh I did 24 once....it was awful. I mean I stopped for food and quick breaks [20:41] one does what one must [20:41] Dad is 93 so I won't be making that trip too many more years [20:41] but yea [20:42] now you drive a bus [20:42] [Owlhawk] I remember you doing 24 [20:42] [Owlhawk] yup, much nicer [20:42] yep, with a 1 year old lol [20:42] 24? I'm working on IP course stuff. :) [21:09] Which class Amber? [21:10] Which course? [21:11] Right now, I'm finalizing Trance 2. I finished the journalling for that, Div 2 and Magic 2 so I need to finish each of them. [21:11] Those are the last 3 courses I need to complete the coursework portion of the IP. [21:11] Nice! [21:11] I've been working on my pre CTP but not tonight [21:11] That's excellent. I really enjoyed the Pre-CTP stuff. [21:12] Well...most of it. ;) [21:12] Wonder if she will let me copy off her at test time [21:12] I'm still working on my DP stuff...hoping to work on a couple of the virtues while I'm on the bus this weekend. Don't get a lot of alone time to work on DP recently [21:13] You do what you can when you can [21:13] You will gt there [21:14] Absolutely. I'd REALLY like to finish by the end of the year, and I still might, I'm about half done, and the year's still half full lol [21:14] The DP took me 5 years, and some take longer than that, so I totally understand! [21:16] TY! I'm a huge advocate of people working on it in their own time...but we're all our own worst critic, right? [21:17] Oh, absolutely. [21:17] DP takes time [21:18] It does. It's a big undertaking, and requires some introspection and some devotion. There is no shame in that being a slower process. [21:18] Very true. You can always do another tweak but at some point you have to hit that send button [21:19] Yeah, I hear that [21:20] I have gotten to the point where I get it good enough and send it in [21:20] My reviewer will tell me what I did wrong [21:21] Very true [21:21] [Owlhawk] I have a friend that does a copy edit of any study program work I'm going to hand in [21:21] I think that's what a lot of people get caught up on. Courses aren't Pass/Fail. It is 100% ok (and expected) to have a course returned for additional work. That doesn't necessarily mean you've done poorly at all. [21:21] Reviewers want you to succeed but the right way [21:21] I just try to make sure any of my essays are good enough to print in our newsletter. If I feel it is, then I put it in the completed folder, and move on to the next. [21:22] So, the difference between it and other courses....If you do "ok" work in a classroom, they may give you a C and you are done with the course. With ADF courses, they don't do that. Instead, they show you where to improve and have you update it to make it "A" level work. :) [21:22] Yeah ... I grammar check and run it through automated copy editing. Having a friend to copy edit would rock [21:22] Good plan, Arin [21:22] Which is what makes it Druid studies, and not plain ol' school [21:22] Exactly. [21:23] Nod ... It's pass / learn something :) [21:24] [Owlhawk] It helps that I copy edit for Oakleaves myself. [21:24] I've been using Scrivener to organize my DP, super helpful, because it actually has rough draft/final draft type elements. [21:25] I keep waffling between using Scrivner and not. I need the portability as sometimes I edit things at work [21:25] And I can organize each document based on what part of the DP it is. High Days/Virtues/Shrine/Etc [21:26] Just got my first student to mentor Super excited to help someone else with the DP [21:26] SOunds like a good program [21:27] That makes sense. I do all my DP work from home, so of course it works for me. And when I finally get a laptop again, I plan on setting it up to screenshare with my home PC, if I ever take it to the library or something, so I can still work in Scrivner [21:27] There is a trial if you want to check it out Rovena [21:27] I tend to do everything in word and sync it to my Google Docs so I can get to it everywhere, even on my phone if I need to. [21:27] I haven't actually done anything with the DP mentorship... [21:28] Arin I was thinking of putting the Scrivner files in Dropbox [21:28] And I LOVE googledocs for that reason. [21:28] Dropbox too, if I hadn't run out of space on it x.x [21:28] Lol yep! [21:28] Alright, I need to go tuck my kiddo in to bed. Thanks for the chat guys! Have a great night. [21:28] *** ambermdoty (Mibbit@sorcery-4bkb05.om.cox.net) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [21:28] Night [21:30] I compile and edit for Kindred Connections too (The Columbia Grove newsletter) so sometimes, if we need more content, I might slip one of my DP pieces in... [21:30] I've had positive feedback so far! Of all one attempts at doing so >.> [21:31] I have been putting my DP pieces in the NW newsletter :) [21:31] :D It's good content for Druid newsletters! [21:31] Definitely [21:33] Yep [21:33] [Owlhawk] don't be afraid to submit pieces to Oakleaves! [21:34] I keep threatening ... One day I will come up with something good enough [21:34] That's about how I feel Victoria [21:34] [Owlhawk] ignore that self defeating thought, and submit already! [21:35] Lol ... I will put it on my to do list :) [21:35] If it is good enough for a local newsletter it should be good enough for Oak Leaves [21:36] *blush* [21:36] Worse that can happen is they say no [21:36] Per-maybe-haps, I shall...I should also pester some of my grove folks to submit, they've got some great articles! [21:37] Saying no can be bad ..... [21:37] [Owlhawk] good. we need articles...which reminds me,I need to edit some of them tomorrow.... [21:37] [Owlhawk] We work to improve the article with the author if necesscary. [21:38] Remember several publishers reject Harry Potter before it was published [21:38] I have a bachelor's in creative writing...never actually submitted to anything more official than...well, our newsletter. [21:38] What kind of articles Owl? [21:38] [Owlhawk] make suggestions on how to improve it if needed, but haven't had to do so as of yet.... [21:38] [Owlhawk] druidry and releated topics [21:38] when does Oak Leaves come out? [21:38] I have a retelling of the Prosephene myth ... It might be good enough [21:39] i need to subscribe and i keep forgetting [21:39] [Owlhawk] deadline for submission was june 1st, this time around [21:39] Can't afford to subscribe right now...hopefully in the next couple months or so... [21:40] I've missed it! I've only missed once since my subscription lapsed, but I still missed having a new Oakleaves to devour! [21:40] i'm looking forward to getting the first one [21:41] When is the next deadline? [21:42] DOn't worry about deadlines. Submit and they will pick the issue that it is the best fit for [21:42] yeah, it will be a LONG time before i feel comfortable thinking about submitting anything [21:43] my article would be "this are all the ways that i am flailing at the Druid thing" and my new blog is good enough for that [21:45] You know Kia ... That might be good too ...show people that we don't all have it together [21:47] [Owlhawk] it's an interesting idea, discussing the difficulties encountered and possible ways to deal with them [21:47] that is true, it's helpful to see that kind of thing, especially someone in my position who wasn't even a pagan before joining ADF [21:48] so i'm learning a whole new language and way of thinking [21:48] and sometimes i just go "I have NO IDEA what is going on" [21:48] [Owlhawk] there is wisdom in doing so. [21:53] since joining ADF I've thought a lot about how i wish there was a blog or website or... i don't even know what that is specifically designed for people who are new pagans [21:54] i'm reading everything i can get my hands on, but almost everything assumes a baseline understanding that i didn't have [21:54] but then again, i'm not sure how big of an audience that would be, other than myself [21:54] Everyone's background is so different that would be har to do [21:55] There are plenty of places to ask questions from here in chat to the forums [21:55] There are a number of folks who were not pagan before ADF [21:55] [Owlhawk] There's lots of books. part of the problem is that there are many different approaches and figuring out what is needed in such a website is not an easy task [21:56] [Owlhawk] and there is nothing as good as experience...which includes making mistakes and figuring things out one day at a time [21:57] that is definitely true [21:57] being a solitary makes it harder too [21:58] i hadn't ever seen a ritual before i did my first one [21:58] so it was very awkward [21:58] There are some videos of solitary rites [21:58] There are rituals on Utube [21:58] We are not good about getting the available [21:59] [Owlhawk] ADF has a youtube channel. Ian corrigan might have one as well. Also, Michael Dangler [21:59] But everyone does it differently while still being COoR [22:03] That's one of the beauties of the COoR I think [22:03] We get to adapt it to us [22:04] I agree [22:08] Well ... Talked about festivals and how awkward it is to be a new pagan [22:14] Vodka is good too [22:14] [Owlhawk] lol [22:14] It's an Icelandic vodka called Reyka [22:16] Never had it but sounds intresting [22:17] it is quite good. very smooth. [22:18] so what were folks saying about festivals? I've only ever been to Trillium and Wellspring. But Ive been to both the past five years. [22:19] Wellspring had an invasion of bugs this year [22:19] They discussed which ones they plan to attend [22:19] I can vouch for that. [22:20] One of these days I'll make it to Summerlands or Harvest Nights. Pretty much every other festival is beyond my range. [22:21] It was a bit funny for me at wellspring. As a southerner it was amusing to hear everyone lament what would be average weather in the south [22:21] That's my problem. The only one I can make without flying is Imbolc Retreat in Western Texas [22:22] I can imagine. I'm in NW Louisiana [22:23] I grew up in the eastern part of NC. lots of bugs, lots of humidity, lots of rain. Which is what we had at Wellspring. [22:24] This is our first week without any rain [22:24] Are you anywhere near the flooding? [22:25] We have several periods of flooding in the past couple of months. Two were 100 yr floods [22:26] My land is high but the roads flood us in [22:27] I remember seeing a picture of a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn standing in a flood, and thinking that given the song it was sadly appropriate. [22:29] Yes we have a song that says "Louisiana they are trying to wash us away" [22:32] Thankfully I live in the foothills, so floods are usually held to lower elevations. sometimes a road will be inpassable, but rarely more than that. [22:34] Louisiana doesn't have foothills [22:35] lamentable. I love the mountains [22:36] Love the mountains but hate the snow. Hubby has arthritis [22:38] that is the trade off.
