[20:53] offline, what do you want t know? I have been a member 15 odd yars [20:53] years [20:55] Well I know it is really more of an individual path. Is that accurate? [20:55] It depends, I always saw ADF at its best as serving its commiunity be that your grove or more [20:56] But the study is all on YOU :) [20:56] It is as accurate as any [20:56] I'd say yes and no. My Grove has a very defined set of lore that has developed over the last ten years or so, and though I've been instrumental in developing that, I also have my own relationships outside of that, as do all of my Grovemates. [20:57] how many groves are there around here? [20:57] Where is here? [20:57] [Owlhawk] to me, it is both an individual path, I'm a solitary,, and a group venture. My initial reason for joining was that i strongly support a public pagan church and this is the strongest candidate. [20:57] [Owlhawk] It's only grown on my from that point. [20:58] one of the things that attracted me to ADF is the flexibility .. there's group worship and solo work. [20:58] I am currently a Solitary too, the only New Zealand ADFer I think (I've not checked for a while). But I tend to try and serve my community as well, because the gods know they need it ;) [20:59] Our communities are however we define them …. I choose not to limit myself to just ADFers, or even just Pagans. [21:00] Well the fact that it is both is really appealing to me. [21:00] I see ADF as both. We serve the local community not only with park clean ups, but also with providing a place for people to be 'publically pagan' and come and have fellowship. But then also druidry has greatly enhanced and enriched my own spirituality. [21:00] OBOD has a lot going for it (too revivalist for me) as does ADF. I'm also a Celtic Recon and my personal practices comef rom that AND ADF. ADf does not really care who else you belong t [21:01] too [21:01] I'm a member of both obod and adf … I like how they compliment each other [21:01] [Owlhawk] One of the other big things about ADF for me, is that is respects the fact that my wife is christian and doesn't get upset about it. she is welcome at fests and events. that is a huge thing for us [21:02] Like I said, we really don't care/mind where else you our your kin worship. [21:06] I like the fact that we tend to have a reason to do what we do … wherever that reason is grounded. [21:07] Yeah, you can't reconstruct PAN IE, but you can apply the approach. You fill out the membership form, pay your $30, and you're a member. After that has happened, you're a member and can work on the Dedicant Study Program [21:41] Some people never do the dedicant program [21:41] This is true. And that's ok too. [21:45] After all its hard enough with some of the north american ones ;) [21:45] I'm not sure what you mean -- what convincing would need to be done? [21:45] [Owlhawk] travel maybe... [21:45] one of these days i'll do my DP [21:45] [Owlhawk] for the initating priests [21:46] There are requirements to be met travel is one, clergy retreats etc [21:46] The clergy retreats aren't required. Just a nice thing to be able to take part in. [21:46] [Owlhawk] every three years I believe? [21:46] I think the bigger issue is the legality of clergy in other countries since ADF isn't recognized legally as a church everywhere. [21:46] Yeah, when (if?) I get ordained, I won't have any legal standing [21:47] There are a number of requirements which are easier in the USA or Canada, than else where. It costs me about $2000 t travel to the US and back [21:47] Also no legal standing here, but I am a justice of the peace so, I can perform various "functions" already [21:48] ok down to this chat and one other chat rather than this chat a call and 4 other FB chats. [21:50] Well cash is really just 1s and 0s now anyway [21:50] sometimes :) [21:51] [Owlhawk] I mail ADF a ,,money order every year. it's always been fine [21:51] I just paypal, its easier and cheaper for me. [21:51] [Owlhawk] i don't have a paypal account and don't really trust paypal... [21:51] How does one get involved in some of the Guilds? [21:52] You do not NEED an account Owlhawk ;) they are safe [21:52] Offline, join the lists first [21:52] [Owlhawk] join the guild and the email list and start emailing on the discussions [21:52] then apply to join if you like it [21:52] [Owlhawk] and finish the study program of said guild, that is a good way as weell [21:53] Most let you right in. The warriors guild when I was in charge got rid of voting people in, for better or worse [21:53] You can do the study programs AFTER the dedicants [21:53] [Owlhawk] I don't trust paypal's security [21:53] Its better than many banks [21:54] Technically you can do the study programs whenever, but you can't get credit for them until after the Dedicants [21:54] [Owlhawk] no, not realy [21:54] Lets agree to disagree Owlhawk [21:54] [Owlhawk] ok [21:54] You CAN do the study programs hell some guilds don't have any [21:55] Many overlap, some don't the Warriors is very different (again for better or worse) due to a recent revamp [21:55] Warriors guild is a bit past me at this point. I beat myself up enough doing Highland games [21:56] Umm that guild is about the spirtual side of being a warrior ... honest.... ok so there are the games at Wellspring, [21:56] The Warriors Guild is a bunch of super cool people [21:56] Most of the time ;) [21:56] Gareth, I am sure I will be involved in it in some way. I, um, have a tendency to challenge myself too much. [21:56] heh [21:56] I think it's about the spiritual side of being a warrior, but for me, it's also about physical fitness, and proving to myself that I can do things I thought I couldn't [21:57] There is just a huge misunderstanding about THAT guild, its is not the 'malitia" of ADF, it is not the "martial artists guild" or the "gun nuts guuild" it is the spiritual guild for those of us who are into that sort of thing [21:57] The Marine in me will say....ooohhh raaahhh and i will be swingin stuff at other people in no time [21:58] Well we have the Military Special Interest Group too [21:58] so actual Martial Arts not a fight club [21:58] NO [21:58] not martial arts either [21:58] I haven't heard any of that recently, Gareth [21:58] Lisa, I made a lot of enemies when I was cheif stomping it out [21:58] someone had too [21:59] Well martial arts to me means the Toa of the art rather than the martial aspects of it. The inner warriors learning if you will [21:59] lol. And if you'd rather not do the warrior stuff there are healers, seers, brewers, dancers, liturgists, bards, magicians, etc....again, lots of diversity. [21:59] See I'm a combatives for civilians guy its not spiritual. guilds should be spiritual first, and the other thing second [22:00] Funny thing ... dance guild broke off from the Warriors guild in the 90s ...just saying [22:00] [Owlhawk] there's a few of us brewers around~ [22:00] [Owlhawk] ! [22:00] Guilds, in my opinion, are about doing the work, in whatever form that work takes [22:00] mmmm brewers guild. I need to nail down all my other crafts before I set up shop brewing though [22:01] Lisa yes that is right. Though some get out of hand about "doing the work" its why certain rules are in place in the Warriors guild over topics to avoid [22:01] Beyond guilds there are Kin, SIGs and Orders [22:02] Ok since you brought that up, can you explain those a bit? [22:02] [Owlhawk] which? [22:03] Well I have not read on those yet so I will find some info on the site. but a brief description of each would be helpful indeed [22:03] Ok guys, I'm off to bed, have a good one [22:03] night Lisa thanks for chatting [22:03] *** LisaWM (Mibbit@57384a87.dsl.cc8fe126.com.hmsk) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [22:04] Kins are specific to a single hearth (Greek, Roman, Slavic, etc), SIGs are Special Interest Groups (Technopagans, Parenting, Solitaries) [22:04] Orders .... um like guilds but not (jk) [22:04] [Owlhawk] oood explaination [22:04] and Orders are dedicated to a specific mythic symbol, such as the Demeter & Eleusian Mysteries, or the Order of Manannan [22:05] Ahh ok so Kins focus on that group of beliefs (for a lack of a better term) [22:05] [Owlhawk] or t he Dead [22:05] Orders exist to provide rituals and training to ADF members in a specific Indo-European mythic or symbolic complex. Orders maintain training programs focused on their respective mythic/symbolic complexes, under the oversight of the Clergy Council, and also periodically publish a number of rituals to the ADF community. [22:05] (from the site) [22:05] Oh wow that is really interesting. [22:05] Correct....they focus on helping to explore ADF through that culture, help write or keep rituals dedicated to the Kindreds of that hearth, etc. [22:06] I'm the cheif of the Gael kin these days (I don't think any one person should hold more than one leadership role, so I stepped down from the warriors last year) [22:06] Yeah had not hit that section of the site yet. Only been researching you all since PPD here in Omaha [22:07] You could spend a lifetime researching the web site [22:07] There are no limits to what you can join ...well baring the safe space for women SIG if you are a guy [22:07] yeah there a HUGE amount of stuff there [22:08] And, to be honest, I am really just getting myself back into just being one with myself and getting comfortable again with calming my head. [22:08] Been over 10 years since I have been involved with anything like this [22:09] Only real advice I'd give is (a) remember this is an Indo-European in its many froms group and (b) have a sense of humor. Those who don't have one .... miss out on the fun [22:09] Yake it one step at a time [22:09] I've got a friend rejoining aftr 12 years away. I've been a member 15 years (as of june this year) [22:10] Feels good to be back into my old habits again. [22:10] or at least relearning them. [22:12] [Owlhawk] meh, break them and see what happens! [22:13] Well these are good habits to be in. Out with the bad in with the good [22:13] *** Rovena (Mibbit@14055a77.6ca5f080.72.170.imsk) has quit IRC [Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client] [22:14] [Owlhawk] so, next topic? [22:15] Rather than break them ... challenge them. Its what got me to finally finish my dedicants. [22:15] I shall. [22:15] I am off to have a dram and get some business stuff done. Thank you all so much for answering my questions. I look forward to learning. [22:16] plus adf will have changed a little since you were last here ;) We're into a new generation of leadership for one. [22:16] [Owlhawk] may your learning bear fruit [22:16] okay dinner time [22:16] [Owlhawk] enjoy [22:16] nice chatting (well, mostly listening, heh) [22:16] see you next time [22:16] night all!
