[19:59] [Owlhawk] Under 4 feet of snow [19:59] im in california, give it to us we need the water xD [20:00] [Owlhawk] That is something each must find out themselves. Ritual is a method of approaching the Gods and Not Gods in a manner that is familiar and repeatable. It is a good method for making offerings. it shows them respect and honur [20:00] ritual is good for centering the mind and focus [20:01] ah that is an interesting bit there, ive never really worked with any deities [20:01] then what are you doing? [20:37] One of the hardest parts of being in Pagan leadership is having to remember multiple names for the same people. [20:37] [Owlhawk] true [20:37] it already has [20:37] lol yes rob [20:38] Depends how we define popular. I'd argue that in much os the US it's at least accepted now. [20:38] [Owlhawk] I wouldn't say it has become popular. [20:38] its not THAT popular though [20:38] and knowing when to use which name [20:38] define "paganism" though [20:38] [Owlhawk] I would say that it is starting to become accepted in general [20:38] Seriously, I'm not sure I could have gotten a more Pagan-y name from Christian parents than Bridgette Elaine [20:38] [Owlhawk] lol [20:38] I can't complain ;) [20:38] Morrigan Sulis? [20:38] hmm earth worship with or without a pantheon of gods [20:38] my boss laughed at me when i asked for the afternoon of Samhain off so i could get ready for the celebration... [20:38] that's very poor form of your boss. [20:38] earth/nature worship [20:39] So we're not including recon polytheists. >8) [20:39] sorry you had to have that happen. [20:39] ya well i called him out on it in front of his boss, so i got an apology [20:39] he doesnt question anymore [20:39] ^_^ [20:39] good - it's not his business to, anyway. [20:39] I take the Friday for before all high days off [20:39] Bonnie! when did you sneak in!? [20:39] i tend to be quiet unless i have reason to bring it up, like in a paranormal/metaphysical conversation or at the book store [20:39] I pitch it as "I'll work Christmas if I can have Yule. I'll work Easter if I can have Ostara..." [20:40] [Owlhawk] the simplest definition of Pagan is 'people who self identify as pagan'. anything else gets arguements [20:40] when your back was turned :D [20:40] I doubt our numbers are going to get as large as Islam or Judaism any time soon. [20:40] It made my jobs really start seeing diversity as an advantage [20:40] I had a bank manager ask me about my valknut today...always fun [20:40] :) [20:40] Owlhawk must have stolen that line from me. >8) [20:40] [Owlhawk] no actually. but great minds do think alike... [20:40] well i work for the gov't and its all xian based holidays here, i dont have an option, i use my holiday days to take time off [20:41] I use my vacation days [20:41] it just looks like christianity got a bunch of pagan holidays and put new traditions and names on them [20:41] ya thats what i meant. vacation days [20:41] luckily, my boss is a pagan, so I get a fair amount of leeway [20:41] when she says she's closing for Yule, I make ZERO notes :D [20:41] nearly everyone at my work is christian catholic i think i would get some strange looks xD [20:41] well i've been very upfront and honest about my days off [20:41] my one job is good with it, my other....well the boss's wife is mega cool [20:42] To an extent that's true, but one can also argue that the mainstream religions have changed them enough to make them their own, in the form they celebrate anyway. [20:42] * BonnieCyr spins Sara in circles. [20:42] I'm lucky enough to live in a college town where people don't bat an eyelash at someone saying they're a Druid, so that helps. [20:43] it was at a "diversity and inclusiveness dialogue" meeting that i called my boss outon his insensitivities [20:43] [Owlhawk] my boss figures that as long as the meowing demonic furballs she calls babies get to drink from the offering bowl, I can have that day off. [20:43] Many people here don't know what a pagan is [20:43] I do miss Ann Arbor Rob. [20:43] ...thats funny [20:43] [Owlhawk] and, if you didn't know, I'm self employed..... [20:44] That's part of why I try to be as out as possible, to make it a little easier for people in other parts of the world to explain what they are. [20:45] Ironically I am attending a graduate counseling program at a seminary and have been shocked at how many pagan - and druidic - practices are taught. Names are often changed, but practices are often the same [20:45] and then you always get that one kid that insists [20:45] I'm pretty out, but I know that boss is not cool and so I don't say much about it (though I still wear my jewelry and such) [20:45] oooooh so you're wiccan [20:45] ? [20:45] wiccan? [20:45] I get the impression there are a lot of pagans there that don't want to admit they are pagan [20:46] I'm sure there still are. [20:46] as far as the ease of explaining what you are lol [20:46] is this not the ADF discussion group chat night? [20:46] It is as far as I know [20:46] mom thought i was wiccan, i explained to her the difference [20:46] then wed [20:47] we'd be hard pressed to find a wiccan here [20:47] We're allowed to discuss Wicca, just don't expect me to have anything meaningful to say about it. >8) [20:47] of coruse [20:47] [Owlhawk] there's a few Wiccans around. the two beliefs can mesh rather well if you work at it [20:47] i went to a Wiccan rit about a month ago [20:47] :D [20:47] heathen!! [20:47] group in the bay area [20:47] it was...okay [20:48] but i came to the conclusion that bog standard wicca isn't for me anymore [20:48] if it ever really was [20:48] the trad I was in had other things to offer [20:48] nods [20:48] The last few i went to just didn't resonate with me at all. Too much energy work, not enough offering. [20:48] ^key phrase right there. [20:48] "if it ever really was" [20:48] ya [20:48] im sort of shamanic/taoist [20:48] I find the style isn't really for me either, but that's me :) [20:49] and i still like the trad rits and people [20:49] i was wiccan back in the 90's when there wasnt' anything else i knew of around, then i found ADF [20:49] more self learned [20:49] but it's on the other side of the continent [20:49] lol [20:49] I had an experience with a local group that was very "Wiccan-ish" where I can best describe it as creating all this sacred space and then having no idea what to do with it [20:49] and some from nature spirits [20:49] I started out Wiccan, but as a gay man the focus on gender polarity and fertility left me feeling on the outside looking in. [21:48] not to bad though life seems determined that i miss most tuesday chats [21:49] [Owlhawk] lol. it'll even out sooner or later [21:50] perhaps [21:51] Yes, Tree of Life of "The Great Tree" [21:51] well if all goes well i will be trying my first light beer in a few months [21:51] Great recommendation, Owlhawk [21:52] [Owlhawk] light beer? [21:52] [Owlhawk] thanks Drum [21:53] :) [21:54] Light beer is any beer that isn't stout, I believe [21:55] [21:55] [21:55] [Owlhawk] lol. [21:55] [Owlhawk] or Porter! [21:57] light beer as in "American light beer" aka miller bud keystone light [21:58] [Owlhawk] my condolences. Who did you anger? [21:58] [Owlhawk] :D [21:58] as to why i am trying it that's what "mix" came with the brew kit that my girlfrineds family bought me [21:59] [Owlhawk] ah. well, not a bad spot to start. the techniques are fairly universal, regardless of if it's a light beer or a stout. it's only when you get to Belgians that things start to change a bit. Seems like a good place to start [22:01] yeah well i don't know how far this kit will get me it is one of the Mr. Beer kits and seems like they want you to use their syrups [22:02] hopped malt extract as they call it [22:02] [Owlhawk] And then add sugar to it? [22:02] [Owlhawk] should work out fine [22:02] just the sugar drops during bottling [22:03] [Owlhawk] hunh. ok. The kits i use you add the sugars to while adding boiling water. then stir the hell out of it [22:04] www.mrbeer.com/ i have the 2 gallon keg version (i will be using an ice chest to help with temp control) [22:05] :) [22:06] It's about time for me to bottle something. I have nothing ready for Wellspring :( [22:06] Brew, not bottle [22:06] yeah [22:07] so my [22:07] may* [22:09] [Owlhawk] lol [22:09] [Owlhawk] Taht doesn't look too bad. you should be fine. I would buy some more sanitizer [22:09] You can never have enough sanitizer\ [22:09] it comes with a pakc [22:10] [Owlhawk] I should have Pomergranate Mead for the Hellenic Symposium and we'll see what beer I can bring. [22:10] [Owlhawk] Strawberry MEad should be ready as well [22:10] [Owlhawk] bblythe, I buy sanitizer by the pound.... [22:11] [Owlhawk] I've never had to worry too much about temp control. our house is pretty good that way, the insulation that finished being sprayed Monday will help that much more. [22:11] yep and as soon as i screw this first batch up I will be going to my friendly neighborhood home brew store [22:12] [Owlhawk] lol. the directions are decent. follow them and you should be ok. I buy the Cooper extract kits. they are good. The Munton's are also good. [22:12] my house is not particularly well insulated, and we have a window heater/ac in the kichen and a small space heater in the bedroom [22:13] [Owlhawk] this reminds me, I should check those two beers fermenting in the dining room and see if they actually started fermenting last week.... [22:13] [Owlhawk] Union Gas had an winterizeation program that we qualified for, so they paid to upgrade the insulation R value in the house. It's a noticeable improvement. [22:15] [Owlhawk] one thing to keep an eye on is the foam from the fermentation over flowing your airlock. that's a problem I tend to have with beers. [22:16] not to big a worry until i move away from the mr beer stuff since the whole thing is designed to use the keg with helpfull measurements on the keg [22:18] [Owlhawk] and the keg makes an awesome dispensing keg once it's ready. keep the thing and use it for serving beers. [22:18] and of course the fermenter will be in the easily cleaned ice chest [22:18] nope the keg wont hold pressure since it has built in airlocks under the cap [22:19] [Owlhawk] that's unfortuanate [22:20] well at least i can start experimenting though when i attempt to move to whole grain brewing i may have to replace everything [22:21] [Owlhawk] I haven't moved to that yet, so I'm not sure. [22:22] [Owlhawk] You'll need bigger primary fermenter either way. that's a small kit [22:22] yeah but the two gallon kit will help me get my feet wet and that is the important part of this [22:23] my cooler temp is steady at 64 so i need to see if i can get it higher [22:23] [Owlhawk] yup. seems like a good way to learn and not spend stupid amounts. [22:24] [Owlhawk] are you doing an ale or a lager? [22:30] lager i think but it tells me that it needs to be between 68-76 f [22:31] [Owlhawk] hunh. most lager yeasts, from what I recall, I'd have to check the yeast charts, like it a bit cooler. [22:31] [Owlhawk] Since it's a lager, you'll want to let it age, or lager, for at least 3 months. perferablly in a fridge [22:34] it dosn't say what kind of yeast it uses just to keep it between 68-76 [22:35] it just says dry brewing yeast [22:35] [Owlhawk] ah. might not be ale yeast. then. I'd try to keep to the lower end of that scale. [22:39] Pilsner style light lager is what it sais that light beers are [22:40] [Owlhawk] lower end of the temp for sure then. In winter my house is at 63 [22:42] yeah when it hit the low 20s my house without the kitchen heater can drop to around 35 (you know the point where your breath just starts to fog) [22:42] [Owlhawk] ouch. [22:43] [Owlhawk] on the other hand, that's good lagering temps.... [22:44] lol but not good living temp [22:45] [Owlhawk] well, a polar bear would think it a tad warm... [22:45] [Owlhawk] we were somewhere below -20C today [22:46] thats cold [22:47] [Owlhawk] nah, that's winter. [22:47] [Owlhawk] there's a reason I have friends and relatives that think -10C is shorts weather. [22:48] lol i will stay with my low 20s being panic weather for the locals (was once doing field training and we couldn't stay outside longer than thirty minuets without worrying about our fleash freezing) [22:50] [Owlhawk] sounds oddly familiar [22:54] lol [22:56] [Owlhawk] meh, that's the price we pay for being Canadian. Wellsprings last year was pretty much shorts weather. [22:56] oh and in the instructions it tells you to keep the bottles at 68-76 to carbonat them [22:58] [Owlhawk] I stick 'em on a shelf in the basement and forget about them for about a month. longer for pilsners and lagers. no idea what the temp down there is. Carbonating in the bottle as you and I do, is a continuation of the fermentation [23:00] [Owlhawk] Well, I'm off to bed. I've enjoyed talking brewing with you. have a good night *** Closed channel log for #adf at 13/01/2015 11:03:38 PM
