I was deeply saddened to learn of Isaac's passing today. Isaac was a guest on my internet show many years ago, and I enjoyed very much interviewing him. He was a brilliant man, and a real character too!

RIP Isaac. Perhaps we can talk again on the other side, someday.

My heart goes out to all of Isaac's family. I think there is no loss that does not diminish us all.

But Isaac's passing is particularly jarring for those of us who admired him so.

He left a bright path behind for any inquisitive mind to follow. What better use can there be for a life?

Blessed Be, Issac.

Merry meet, and merry part. We'll merry meet again!

Deeply saddened to learn of Isaac's passing. Encountering his book, "Real Magic," at the Brooklyn Public Library back in 1971, played a crucial role in my first coming to identify as a Neo-Pagan. His descriptions therein shaped my understanding of the principles of magickal phenomena and helped elicit my calling to a participatory Nature Religion. The complex of ideas and images surrounding the concept of Druidism always remained among the most compelling magickal themes for me. I admired Isaac's pursuit of excellence in scholarship and ritual practice, and always found his lectures witty and informative. We have lost one of the guiding lights of our subculture. May a vigorous new generation arise and follow through on his vision for ADF.

How does one mourn the passing of a friend?

Not hard. What cannot be expressed in words, are expressed with a heavy heart and copious tears. Journey on, Isaac.

It is said that the Irish cry at christenings and laugh at wakes. This is because the newly born are just starting the trials of being alive on this plane of existence. Conversely, they laugh at wakes, as the newly deceased are released from this valley of tears and travel to Tir na nOg, a land of eternal joy.

May we all laugh for Isaac, as he has left this realm of pain and sickness and is finally free of his trials and tribulations.

Although Issac was a very laid back and gentle man full of Humor and humility that he did not wish to me known as anything more wonderfull than- just another pagan man.

TO me he was, is ,and always will be a God.

HE gave me my life purpose years ago after I was returned from death on the operating table.

And IF it were possible I would surely have traded places with him in his final days so that he could continue his work and fun here on earth.

I only met him in person once and it was the greatest moment of my life.

I said my goodbyes and gave my blessings to Isaac at the end of June when Deborah and I visited him in the hospital. To his remark "I'm dying" I said "we are all dying but some of us like you have lives that live on in their work."

Isaac was such a person whose work has a life of its own. His spirit has a home in many places, many things and many people but mainly it lives in his work and words and the organizations he has built.

I'm glad to call him a friend and to have shared knowledge and work with him.

I will be attending the memorial Phaedra is planning next Saturday near their home.

There is much work that Isaac set out to do that remains to be done. I hope that all of us can rise to meet and exceed that effort and support his family in the process.

Tune: David of the White Rock

Isaac lay dying his wife by his side;
"Sing, Druids, sing, though I falter," he cried.
Faint his aged voice, though his spirit was strong;
Mountains and valleys all echoed his song.

Isaac our Founder, we sing songs you wove;
Those sweet sounds linger at home-hearth and grove.
Thy brave heart beats with each chant that we sing;
Through all the Ages those echoes shall ring!

I am glad to have met Isaac at my first Wellspring in 2009. I was at the pot luck dinner and he joined my wife (Irisa) and I at our table for dinner. He was looking out at the Fairy ring of stone with a big smile on his face...There were about 10 children playing around the rocks. He then said."That is the 3rd generation.I did this." He seemed amazed.
This moment stuck with me, and was the best part of that Wellspring. Much of my dedication to ADF was born right there.
This year ADF took a big step in making Isaac's dream come true in getting Paganism out into the public in being invited (invited, not fight for, they came to us) to have a Sunday service Lughnassadh at the 2nd largest Irish festival in the world....We have over 300 people.
Isaac. your dream that you started will go on without you.
May your next time around the wheel be a vibrant and filled with joy as you have had this one.

Not only has a giant of a man who did not fear speaking his truth left us, but also a great mind has passed from this plane. His thought-provoking examination of all aspects of life was an inspiration to those of us who view our faith no only in our hearts but also with our ever-questioning minds. His acceptance of all of life made it as acceptable to be an intellectual as to be a "party Pagan." I feel that I can speak for many of us when I say that we were so blessed that he walked among us leaving words of wisdom burning in our brains as well as working alone recording his thoughts in books and leaving those wise thoughts and considerations for the next generations of questions yet to be asked.

I shall continue to work, through my coven and my Tradition, to be a voice of reason as we, who practice the Pagan Religions, continue to work to become part of the mainstream religion which you envisioned 30 years ago.

The quote below is from my coven website and has been my goal for many years:

"It is a goal of the High Priestess that some day we can truly come from the shadows, without persecution, and be recognized as the fine people that we are; and finally, to have the same amount of respect within the greater community, that adherents of other religious beliefs have.

When I was twenty two I read Real Magic by Isaac Bonewits. It was one of the first books that was suggested to me by my HPS at the time - and I'm glad she asked me to read it, as I thought it was realistic, scientific and written from a grounded point of view. I thought, know that read was a breath of fresh air. A book written by a man ground on terra firma, but yet sailing to new heights in thought and magickal understanding.

Once at a Starwood festival, Isaac asked me if my friends thought I was a bore after he looked at the boar heads on my torc.

May peace be with Isaac and his family. May the Shinning One's bless Isaac in all ways possible.

Dearest Phaedra and the ADF Community,
I have never had the pleasure of meeting either you or Isaac. But I feel very led to share this with you. I have considered joining an American Druid order for quite some time, and after much deliberation, decided to join ADF 2 weeks ago. The one thing that influenced my decision more than anything else was the writings of its founder, Isaac Bonewits. I was so saddened to hear of his illness, then of his passing yesterday. He will long be remembered, and will continue to influence others who are seeking a true Druid Path, long after his departure.

I never met Issac in person (though I am friends with his brother, Docus). He did inspire me early on as Real magick was one of the first books I read. I had always had a leaning towards Druidry and consider myself a Druid. His teaching and writings from his knowledge and wisdom have help me, and countless others learn about the ancient ways of our ancestors. His wit made us laugh (remember those soggy wizards). He was a great man in our community and his death is a great loss to everyone in the Pagan and Heathen community. May the Morrigu rush your soul to the Summerlands Grandfather Isaac. You have left a legacy of love and scholarship that will inspire generations to come. Rest well friend. You have earned it. It is time for you to now take your honored place amongst the gods. As one who has studied the path for over a 1/3 of his life.Isaac was one of THE names,Cunningham,Ravenwolf, etc. But what I liked about him was he seemed very real in his writings. Like anyone walking down the street could pickup one of his books and understand what he was talking about. When putting together his Pagan Man book, there was a request for participants. I thought why not. There's not a lot out there for being a pagan man.So I printed off the form, filled it out and sent it in. Lo and behold when the book was released.I saw a quote of mine in it. Now not knowing the man personally,I just hope that he was thinking, someone out there could use it.So may you be at rest as long as you need, and may you come back to better times. And to his friends and family I say this.As one who has lost many in this life.Grieve for them but a short while then remember the smiles, joys they gave and be sad no more.

Posted on Facebook prior to Isaac's passing.
Another of the founders of the Pagan Movement in America has reached the end of his Journey. I have known this wonderful man for over 6yrs and, although our meetings were separated by years, considered him to be a friend.
I am not alone in considering him a friend, for he touched many lives, both in person and via his extensive writings. He may not have been in agreement with everyone that he interacted with, but, as long as learning and growth were taking place, he was fine with the disagreements.
He was a man of great insight, unbelievable scholarship, vast knowledge and wonderful wit. The gifts this man gave to Druidism and Paganism are more than could ever be repayed.
Isaac, as you move on to your time of reflection and rest, know that you are deeply loved and that you will be missed. The knowledge and scholarship that you leave as your legacy will keep you in our hearts and minds forever more. Go with peace, my friend.

I am so grateful to have talked with Isaac on several occasions, at Starwood workshops whether he was leading or 'just' participating in the discussion, as well as the time Isaac and Phaedra visited our Unitarian Universalist congregation at the behest of its CUUPS group for what turned out to be an intimate afternoon of discussion.

His books and essays will continue to enlighten through the rest of this century and beyond. We are so grateful for his many contributions to Pagans and Paganism. And he has earned a brilliant place on our Ancestor altars now.

Maybe somehow I knew it would be the last time I'd see him, or maybe I was just really drunk. Probably a little of both.

Isaac, I love that you wrote in your "Immodest Third Person Introduction," "Isaac wishes it officially known that he is not "A Pagan Spiritual Leader," but merely one of the Neopagan movement's better-known Unindicted Co-Conspirators...."

We will miss you desperately around the fire, but the conspiracy continues my friend. Fare well you old scoundrel.

I did not know Isaac very well, but did get a chance to meet him last year and hear him speak. He was authentic, brilliant, and entertaining. I regret not being able to get to know him better, but feel that spiritually, I have been touched by his fire, his vision, and I will carry it with me throughout my life.

As a proud member of the ADF, I will now add his name to the names of my ancestors of blood and spirit, and honour him for his enormous contributions to modern paganism and my own spiritual path. Donn, Dark One, bring him peace, and Bright Brigid, take him in your loving arms.

I will be forever grateful to Isaac for reviving Celtic religion and
scholarship for the Pagan public in America. I first became aware that there
were still Druids in this world because one of my herb clients had met Isaac
in the early 1980's. She was very impressed by his scholarship and wit and
that caused me to go looking for Druids. I received my fist Druid training
through ADF and Isaac officiated at my Second Circle vigil in 1986, at PSG.
Years later I was declared the first "ADF Heretic" (I was one of five people
who hived off to found The Henge of Keltria) and it was Isaac who insisted
on reinstating me as a member in good standing. I will always remember his
warmth and intelligence and wonderful sense of humor. I suspect that he will
begin challenging the beings of the Otherworld shortly, to ensure that they
maintain excellence. Farewell brother Druid. I miss you.

I join you in mourning the passing of an important Pagan leader, writer and philosopher. We are much impoverished by Isaac's death. Isaac was a rich man in terms of his scholarship, his passion for Druidry, and his humor. I will particularly miss Isaac's humor and the mischief in his eyes when he was satirizing something during a lecture. I will miss the amusing stories he told during his classes: I often got more out of the anecdotes than the classes, but then I actually read his books...... I arranged a few interviews for Isaac when I was working a lot in Pagan religious rights, and he always did us proud. He was a fine man, seasoned with humor and leavened by wisdom. I send sincere condolences to all at ADF, and to Phaedra and Arthur.

I've followed Isaac Bonewits' career for some years, reading articles he had written, and his book Real Magic (which is a favourite of mine). After keeping vigil most of the night, I finally fell asleep this morning around 5 am. When I awoke late morning, I sensed something in the world had changed and I knew what it was.

With some deaths the feeling is as if something has been sucked out of the world and left a hole, but this was not what I felt. Yes, I felt his loss, but I somehow felt that Isaac was more present and alive than ever. I know he never wanted to be "Saint" Isaac so forgive me if my words seem to imply this. For me, at least, somehow the world seems more full of him than ever and I personally have found new courage in that. I hope I can take that and run with it, to take hold of his vision and make it even more my own than ever before.

I honor you, Phaedra and family, for loving and caring for him through this life and through such painful times. You have given us a gift. May you find the blessing of comfort in this great love.

We remember Isacc's interview in Mondo Pagan.

"My beliefs about life after death tend to shift a great deal. ..." He then made a joke about having believed in reincarnation 800 years earlier as a Buddhist monk.

"I believe people spend far too much time worrying about life after death and an insufficient amount of time worrying about this life, and the responsibilities that we have to ourselves, our community and our great, great grandchildren.

"I'll find out what happens when I die; everybody does. Probably for everybody it's a surprise."

Isaac was a trailblazer but never a trail boss. It's okay to be irascible cuz that's what made him UNerasable. I'm glad I knew "he."

We met a year and a week ago at House of Danu's Gorsedd 2009. During downtime, Isaac liked hanging out in the kitchen. As housemother, as I washed dishes, we had a couple superb private conversations. Being night-people, I saw him around the campfire til 4 AM several nights. Our conversations and singing/drumming made my weekend. His scholarship and humor helped so many Druids and Neopagans, and his writings will help countless others lead ethical Neopagan lives. He made it alright to not-wanna be Christian. He carried on for a great many other than himself. May the haywagon in the sky unburden him and take him to see people who died before him whom he missed.

If it's one thing Isaac had, it's GRIT. May all Pagans everywhere inherit his true grit! He gave a wonderful gift to female Neopagans: it's okay for females to be gritty, not pretty.

To all of Isaac's family, and my former brothers and sisters at ADF, I wish to offer my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting Isaac when I was new to ADF 11 years ago, some years after he had stepped aside from his position as Archdruid.

Though Isaac was legend, he was very humble and giving, and spent hours talking with me in that one weekend, answering every question and helping to shape my path. It was that October weekend, early in my coming to this path that shaped me more than any other, even though I have since become a solitary.

Thank you for the gift that is Isaac, and to all the gods and goddesses, I pray, though I am certain you will welcome him gladly as one of our Ancestors.

My condolences to Phaedra and Arthur in their time of grief and loss. I am a Medical ICU Registered Nurse, and I see what cancer does to patients AND their families all the time. I understand that he was home during his last moments. To be surrounded by such love is slowly becoming more rare in this day and age of broken families and broken people. To be surrounded by your loved ones when you take your last breath is not a blessing many get to receive.
Isaac has touched so many of us in the Pagan community, it was hard to imagine what life would be like without him. He most certainly will live on through his works, and most definitely through Ar nDraiocht Fein. I shall honor him along with my Ancestors and the Blessed Dead.

I remember the first time I read anything by Isaac must have been one oof his earliest cries for people to join Pagan Awareness published in Metaphysical newspaper distributed in Falls Church, Virginia around 1988-89. It moved me so and I knew I had found the one person with whom I identified spiritually. I visited a local ADF group, received the warmest of welcomes, and a piece of literature that would shape my Pagan path for the next twenty plus years. Through his books and articles he has been my mentor, and a spiritual role model where I had none. His wit grounded me in reality where I saw others usurped by serious personal dogma. When Ian writes that a "Hero" has joined the ranks of the Ancestors, he has known the man I knew too.

Isaac,

We never really met, though you once answered an email of mine; nevertheless, your words have truly touched my life in ways I will probably never know. You seem to have met so many of my friends and family, and your words to them shaped my path in Neopaganism from the beginning. When I finally joined ADF, your vision (mentioned again and again in books, essays, and so forth) continued to have an impact.

Isaac, you are immortal, in the way spoken of by Brendan Myers: your memory, your deeds, and your influence on Neopaganism will far outlast all of us. May you never be forgotten in this world, and may your journeys ever be pleasant and worthwhile.

Blessings to the Bonewits family and everyone who was touched positively by Isaac.

The Druid's Life

The Druid's life, as it be known,
Is carved for all upon the stone
To leave a lasting legacy
For all who open eyes to see.

So enter Stonehenge, breathe its air,
Discover life's true meaning there,
Written within the stars, so bright,
Your path of everlasting light.

Then set your foot upon this path
And do not contemplate the math.
The sky, unfurled before you now
Will sanctify your sacred vow.

The Druid's circle, once complete,
Will lay its blessings at your feet
And bring your spirit home, at last,
To a garden of peace and love so vast.

Isaac asked permission to play my harp and then he made it sing without knowing "how to play" by conventional standards. I had the honour of meeting Isaac twice, and Phaedra once, in 2004. Once in Montgomery, Alabama, and again a couple months later at PUF in Nashville, where he did the impossible ... showed us how about 50 people could write a wonderfully moving ritual as a committee. It was an honour to have met him. I will always hold what he said about herding cats close to heart. "It's easy to do, you just have to open the can of cat food!"

Isaac contributed so very much to our community, and of course to Our Own Druidry. We cannot thank him enough, nor can we thank the Gods enough for letting him stay with us for a while.

I read his books, I poured over neopagan.net, I have heard the almost countless stories of his wit, fun, and exploits and yet, what I remember most was a gentle man with an easy smile who was willing to stop and share a few words with someone he had just barely met.

I am deeply honored to have met him and immensely proud to, in some small way, be a part of the growing tradition he created that lives on.

Blessed Be Isaac, safe journeys.

Isaac was truly a pioneer in the advancement of pagan religions. His vision of making them into mainstream acceptability will challenge the rest of us to carry on his work. Hail Isaac, a new ancestor for us to show our love, our thanks and to honor.

As I posted on your facebook a few days ago, I was talking to a Christian Minister the other day about passings. We both agreed that the best thing we as humans can do, is to leave behind a positive influence and a lasting legacy. I firmly believe you have done both.

Thank you for giving me my faith.
