Imbas Liturgy
by Erika Brown
1. Cleansing and Beginning
A. Approaching Processional (Bodhran rhythm)
B. Outdwellers (Facing west; Place coin at designated
location outside of Nemeton)
Primal Dark Ones who defied our Gods and Goddesses
We give you this tithe and establish the boundary
Enter not this Nemeton, for this is holy ground
We likewise banish from ourselves
That which troubles us in our deepest heart
No pain, no fear, no doubt
Shall enter this Nemeton, for this is holy ground
Attendees: This is holy ground!
C. Sidhe (Beans, corn kernels or cornmeal scattered
about the edge of the Nemeton)
Spirits of the sidhe in-dwelling this place
We seek your blessing and your grace
Kindred of the sidhe within this land
We honor your presence as together we stand
We claim use of this sacred space, for our holy purpose
Sidhe-folk, accept our offering
Attendees: Sidhe-folk accept our offering
D. Entering the Nemeton (Enter from the East; Censer
and asperse attendees as entering Nemeton, saying:)
May you be cleansed by Fire, purified by Water and fit to come before
the Holy Ones
Attendees: Fire purify me and water cleanse me, that I be fit to come
before the Holy Ones
E. Quickening the Fire (Light the Fire and upraise
arms in a swooshing motion as flames leap forth)
Fires of Creation come forth within us, within our Nemeton! We burn
for your illuminating flames.
Attendees: We burn for your illuminating
flames!
F. Awakening the Well (Uncover the Well and stir the
water x3, dropping in a hazelnut each time)
Well of Wisdom flow within us, within our Nemeton! We thirst for
your stirring waters.
Attendees: We thirst for your stirring
waters.
2. Establishing Group Mind
Claiming (once the Nemeton is full, 3 knells then)
1. The Crossing
We have crossed the bridge
We stand within the realm of the holy
A numinous place, between the worlds
Beyond the fires of the hearth
To the wood, the Nemeton
The Sacred Grove in which we gather
To give praise, give offering
And worship here with our kindred
Listen to them, folk of the earth
Hear them in birdcall around you
In the breath of wind upon you
Fire in the head within you
Reach out your spirit and open yourselves to trust
Feel the River of Life flowing within you
Within this place between the worlds
(3 knells)
2. Song of Creation
In the beginning, there was no beginning
The Great Womb always was
Into this the Cosmic Seed of Consciousness was drawn
And life burst forth, creating the worlds
In its youth, water covered the earth
And bodiless beings inhabited the mists
From the depths arose land and fire
And Danu was born from chaos
Spirits of land, sea and sky collided
Carving the face of the world
River-Mother trickled, then began to flow
Great rivers sprang forth, nourishing the land
Valleys and mountains came into being
Lakes were pooled and unto this fertile world
Sun-Father Daghda greeted the land with warmth and light
Creatures and green things were born
Bile the Sacred Oak grew strong, giving shade and the first fruits
From this ancient world the Shining Ones came
The Magic People, Tribe of Danu
Battling the Dark Ones, races of giants
Primal Ones from the earth’s beginnings
Clearing and cultivating, creating sacred landscape
And it came to pass that we, the Folk, were born
Inheriting the land of light from the Magic Ones
Who entered the earth, living beside us
Thus the three sacred realms
Land above, land between, land below
Until the living sun shall fall from the sky
3. Establishing Sacred Center
A. Bile, Stone and Mound
In the navel of the world, we worship
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
All things are joined, and met within
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
All things expand, from place herein
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
Great Bile, through all worlds reaching
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
Stone of Destiny, sovereign teaching
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
Holy Mound, sheltering Old Ones
Attendees: Living heart, sacred center
In the navel of the world, we worship
Here, all things are possible
From the navel of the world gather unto yourself its strength
Its vitality, its purity and be renewed!
We call upon the Gatekeeper to help us part the veil
Cross into the mist and open the ways to the Otherside within
B. Gatekeeper’s Call
Gatekeeper we call to Thee, open the ways between (repeat x3)
Guide and ward us as we walk, through worlds of spirit unseen
We seek your blessing, O Nechtan
From the Well of Segais
Five flowing gifts we thirst for
Watering streams of knowledge
Over the Well of Segais
Shading Otherworld Tree we hunger for
Fruiting hazelnuts dropped therein
Grant us your blessing, O Nechtan
Worthy supplicants we are
Approaching in purity
Lift us into the mist
To Otherworlds within
Ward us and let us float safely back downstream, to our place within
the Nemeton. Nechtan, accept our offering.
Attendees: Nechtan, accept our offering
(Drop hazelnuts into the Well)
C. Heart rhythm and Group Vibration-Chant (Steady
heartbeat drum rhythm while guiding attendees to begin resonating from
abdomen upward into throat, simultaneously upraising arms and hands
towards the sky. Once the “vibe” is right, progress into
a chant that can be sustained for a few minutes while holding hands
or doing something else)
4. Offerings
A. Ancestors (Facing South)
Here, within our hearts
Here, within our memories
The Old Ones live immortal
Ancestors, Elders of Blood and Spirit
Givers of life your children call to you
Ancestors hear us!
Attendees: Ancestors hear us!
We honor you
We seek your guiding wisdom
Bless us with your presence in our lives and Nemeton
For we shall one day join you in the Feast Eternal

6. Reciprocity
A. Ogham Omen (Seer is given hazelnuts to chew)
The time has come upon us, to seek the wisdom of the Shining Ones
As the Seer prepares, let us hear the words of Amergin White-Knee
Song of Amergin
I am a wind upon the sea
I am a wave of the ocean
I am the sound of the sea
I am a stag of seven tines
I am an ox of seven combats
I am a hawk above the cliff
I am a golden teardrop of the sun
I am the fairest of blossoms
I am a wild boar in valor
I am a salmon in a pool
I am a lake in a plain
I am a tree upon a hill
I am the God who kindles fire in the head
Who enlightens the assembly upon the mountain, if not I?
Who telleth the ages of the moon, if not I?
Who showeth the resting-place of the sun, if not I?
Seer, what does the Ogham speak?
(Seer interprets Ogham cast for the Grove)
B. Final Offering (All unused portions of offerings
and offerings are gathered into one vessel for the Final Offering)
Our gifts to Danu returned
By our hand that which goes unused
In final vessel we pour unto you
Our hopes and prayers
Hear us River Mother
Receive us into your grace
Danu accept our offering
Attendees: Danu accept our offering
(Final offerings poured into ritual shaft at base of Bile)
C. Waters of Life
As we have given, so let us receive. Behold the Blessing Horn, the
communion cup we share together.
(Elevate Blessing Horn for all to see)
We reach out for the Bright Knowledge
Attendees: Let it flow over us, let
it flow within
We open ourselves to the Waters of Life
Attendees: Let it flow over us, let
it flow within
We imbibe the blessings of the Shining Ones
Attendees: Let it flow over us, let
it flow within
Behold the Waters of Life!
The Horn is passed
Attendees: The waters are shared
The flow returns
