Submitted by Name: Cary Robyn From: Brooklyn, NY Comments: Deeply saddened to learn of Isaac's passing. Encountering his book, "Real Magic," at the Brooklyn Public Library back in 1971, played a crucial role in my first coming to identify as a Neo-Pagan. His descriptions therein shaped my understanding of the principles of magickal phenomena and helped elicit my calling to a participatory Nature Religion. The complex of ideas and images surrounding the concept of Druidism always remained among the most compelling magickal themes for me. I admired Isaac's pursuit of excellence in scholarship and ritual practice, and always found his lectures witty and informative. We have lost one of the guiding lights of our subculture. May a vigorous new generation arise and follow through on his vision for ADF.

Not hard. What cannot be expressed in words, are expressed with a heavy heart and copious tears. Journey on, Isaac.
It is said that the Irish cry at christenings and laugh at wakes. This is because the newly born are just starting the trials of being alive on this plane of existence. Conversely, they laugh at wakes, as the newly deceased are released from this valley of tears and travel to Tir na nOg, a land of eternal joy.
May we all laugh for Isaac, as he has left this realm of pain and sickness and is finally free of his trials and tribulations.

Isaac was such a person whose work has a life of its own. His spirit has a home in many places, many things and many people but mainly it lives in his work and words and the organizations he has built.
I'm glad to call him a friend and to have shared knowledge and work with him.
I will be attending the memorial Phaedra is planning next Saturday near their home.

I was at the pot luck dinner and he joined my wife (Irisa) and I at our table for dinner. He was looking out at the Fairy ring of stone with a big smile on his face...There were about 10 children playing around the rocks. He then said."That is the 3rd generation.I did this." He seemed amazed. This moment stuck with me, and was the best part of that Wellspring. Much of my dedication to ADF was born right there. This year ADF took a big step in making Isaac's dream come true in getting Paganism out into the public in being invited (invited, not fight for, they came to us) to have a Sunday service Lughnassadh at the 2nd largest Irish festival in the world....We have over 300 people. His thought-provoking examination of all aspects of life was an inspiration to those of us who view our faith no only in our hearts but also with our ever-questioning minds. His acceptance of all of life made it as acceptable to be an intellectual as to be a "party Pagan." I feel that I can speak for many of us when I say that we were so blessed that he walked among us leaving words of wisdom burning in our brains as well as working alone recording his thoughts in books and leaving those wise thoughts and considerations for the next generations of questions yet to be asked.

The quote below is from my coven website and has been my goal for many years:
"It is a goal of the High Priestess that some day we can truly come from the shadows, without persecution, and be recognized as the fine people that we are; and finally, to have the same amount of respect within the greater community, that adherents of other religious beliefs have.

It was one of the first books that was suggested to me by my HPS at the time - and I'm glad she asked me to read it, as I thought it was realistic, scientific and written from a grounded point of view. I thought, know that read was a breath of fresh air. A book written by a man ground on terra firma, but yet sailing to new heights in thought and magickal understanding.
Once at a Starwood festival, Isaac asked me if my friends thought I was a bore after he looked at the boar heads on my torc.

Like anyone walking down the street could pickup one of his books and understand what he was talking about. When putting together his Pagan Man book, there was a request for participants. I thought why not. There's not a lot out there for being a pagan man.So I printed off the form, filled it out and sent it in. Lo and behold when the book was released.I saw a quote of mine in it. Now not knowing the man personally,I just hope that he was thinking, someone out there could use it.So may you be at rest as long as you need, and may you come back to better times. I am not alone in considering him a friend, for he touched many lives, both in person and via his extensive writings. He may not have been in agreement with everyone that he interacted with, but, as long as learning and growth were taking place, he was fine with the disagreements. He was a man of great insight, unbelievable scholarship, vast knowledge and wonderful wit. The gifts this man gave to Druidism and Paganism are more than could ever be repayed. She was very impressed by his scholarship and wit and that caused me to go looking for Druids. I received my fist Druid training through ADF and Isaac officiated at my Second Circle vigil in 1986, at PSG. Years later I was declared the first "ADF Heretic" (I was one of five people who hived off to found The Henge of Keltria) and it was Isaac who insisted on reinstating me as a member in good standing. I will always remember his warmth and intelligence and wonderful sense of humor. I suspect that he will begin challenging the beings of the Otherworld shortly, to ensure that they maintain excellence. Farewell brother Druid. I miss you.

Isaac was a rich man in terms of his scholarship, his passion for Druidry, and his humor. I will particularly miss Isaac's humor and the mischief in his eyes when he was satirizing something during a lecture. I will miss the amusing stories he told during his classes: I often got more out of the anecdotes than the classes, but then I actually read his books...... I arranged a few interviews for Isaac when I was working a lot in Pagan religious rights, and he always did us proud. He was a fine man, seasoned with humor and leavened by wisdom. I send sincere condolences to all at ADF, and to Phaedra and Arthur.

With some deaths the feeling is as if something has been sucked out of the world and left a hole, but this was not what I felt. Yes, I felt his loss, but I somehow felt that Isaac was more present and alive than ever. I know he never wanted to be "Saint" Isaac so forgive me if my words seem to imply this. For me, at least, somehow the world seems more full of him than ever and I personally have found new courage in that. I hope I can take that and run with it, to take hold of his vision and make it even more my own than ever before.
I honor you, Phaedra and family, for loving and caring for him through this life and through such painful times. You have given us a gift. May you find the blessing of comfort in this great love.

"My beliefs about life after death tend to shift a great deal. ..." He then made a joke about having believed in reincarnation 800 years earlier as a Buddhist monk.
"I believe people spend far too much time worrying about life after death and an insufficient amount of time worrying about this life, and the responsibilities that we have to ourselves, our community and our great, great grandchildren.

We met a year and a week ago at House of Danu's Gorsedd 2009. During downtime, Isaac liked hanging out in the kitchen. As housemother, as I washed dishes, we had a couple superb private conversations. Being night-people, I saw him around the campfire til 4 AM several nights. Our conversations and singing/drumming made my weekend. His scholarship and humor helped so many Druids and Neopagans, and his writings will help countless others lead ethical Neopagan lives. He made it alright to not-wanna be Christian. He carried on for a great many other than himself. May the haywagon in the sky unburden him and take him to see people who died before him whom he missed.
If it's one thing Isaac had, it's GRIT. May all Pagans everywhere inherit his true grit! He gave a wonderful gift to female Neopagans: it's okay for females to be gritty, not pretty.

Submitted by Name: Amber SkySpirit From: Largo, Florida Comments: I remember the first time I read anything by Isaac must have been one oof his earliest cries for people to join Pagan Awareness published in Metaphysical newspaper distributed in Falls Church, Virginia around 1988-89. It moved me so and I knew I had found the one person with whom I identified spiritually. I visited a local ADF group, received the warmest of welcomes, and a piece of literature that would shape my Pagan path for the next twenty plus years. Through his books and articles he has been my mentor, and a spiritual role model where I had none. His wit grounded me in reality where I saw others usurped by serious personal dogma. When Ian writes that a "Hero" has joined the ranks of the Ancestors, he has known the man I knew too.

We never really met, though you once answered an email of mine; nevertheless, your words have truly touched my life in ways I will probably never know. You seem to have met so many of my friends and family, and your words to them shaped my path in Neopaganism from the beginning. When I finally joined ADF, your vision (mentioned again and again in books, essays, and so forth) continued to have an impact.
Isaac, you are immortal, in the way spoken of by Brendan Myers: your memory, your deeds, and your influence on Neopaganism will far outlast all of us. May you never be forgotten in this world, and may your journeys ever be pleasant and worthwhile.
Blessings to the Bonewits family and everyone who was touched positively by Isaac.

The Druid's Life
The Druid's life, as it be known, Is carved for all upon the stone To leave a lasting legacy For all who open eyes to see.
So enter Stonehenge, breathe its air, Discover life's true meaning there, Written within the stars, so bright, Your path of everlasting light.
Then set your foot upon this path And do not contemplate the math. The sky, unfurled before you now Will sanctify your sacred vow.
The Druid's circle, once complete, Will lay its blessings at your feet And bring your spirit home, at last, To a garden of peace and love so vast.

It was an honour to have met him. I will always hold what he said about herding cats close to heart. "It's easy to do, you just have to open the can of cat food!"
